Lack of resources and education kept them at their subsistence levels, but I don't think it's possible to return us to that. Like I agreed in the first comment on this thread, I have no qualms with people who keep their private business to themselves, no matter how self-harmful. If you want to drink yourself to death, well, I won't stop you there either, though I'll try to discourage you from doing it.
