I recently shopped a laptop for my wife. I wanted to get her something with a good rep, and non-soldered RAM without spending too much, so looked for a used Thinkpad. I tried ordering on newegg, ebay, and tigerdirect. Ebay fails when attempting to pay, newegg cancelled the order, and tigerdirect put a hold on it. When I contacted tiger, they told me because the phone number I gave(fake), wasn't associated to my name(also fake), they couldn't release the order.

The free internet is dying. Thinking the darknet will soon be the only place I can purchase goods online. Ended up buying one from a local computer shop.

Is that still a thing? I have not seen soldered RAM since Tandy Radio Shack and Gateway boxes from the 1980s.

Good. Support local business that hire local and pay local taxes.

Apparently everything but the hard drive is soldered for most laptops. As someone who has only built PC's, found that very strange. I guess there are some high end rigs that allow processor swap, but best you can usually do is non-soldered RAM.

Paid for than Ebay, but got to actually see the guy, seems pretty reputable from my interactions, and Yelp reviews, and prices compared well to other local shops and what I could get online.

Quad core i5, 12gb RAM, 256SSD. Actually runs Windows 11 without a ton of lag. Again, it's for the wife, so the swap over to Linux may not happen right away. Did spend a couple hours uninstalling and disabling Microsoft shit to make it faster, and give her a bit more privacy.

My wife got an apple laptop. When she put tape on the camera, an NSA agent came live on her screen and said if she didn't remove the tape, they would kill her dog.

Sounds like the credit-card fraud department is doing the right thing.

One nice thing my Costco Visa card does is send me an instant message every time the card is charged without the card being present. I think this is a great idea, because it means I can report fraud immediately instead of having to wait for my monthly statement.

The new Apple ARM-based laptops can't be upgraded for storage or RAM. I can't quite blame Apple for the memory situation, as the memory is directly wired into the CPU/GPU package, not going through the motherboard at all. This setup facilitates low-latency needs of the CPU with the high-bandwidth needs of the GPU.

In prior years of the Intel-based iMacs the 24-inch iMac had soldered RAM whereas the 27-inch had user-upgradable. I remember looking at the math of wanting a 32 GB system ... it was cheaper to buy the 27-inch and upgrade the memory than to get the (lesser) 24-inch iMac, such was Apple's memory pricing.

You're comparing the actions of a retailer, to the actions of a bank. I say bank for simplification purposes, because that's who issues your card, and monitors it's activity. If the bank for the card I used blocks the transaction, I have no issue with that. But the bank allowed the transaction.

What your comparison really advocates for, if you follow it to it's logical conclusion, is 3rd parties monitoring and regulating your expenditures. Would you like if suddenly I was required to approve all your transactions using my own set of criteria?
