Probably just one of those hoods where this is Wild West all the time. They are all over the place in the usual urban blight areas and most of the activities seldom rise to the attention of news. When I was working for a guy, his branch office was in Richmond and they said there were gunshots and robberies in the parking lot every week. In New Orleans, my wife had an apartment in a 'mixed' area and you could stroll over to a shopping center and see cars with bullet holes in the windshields and chassis. People would be shot and killed when they stopped at intersections. No biggee.

If you spend a bit of time in emergency rooms, you realize how under counted person on person violence is, because all kinds of shootings, stabbings and beatings never make the police stats unless somebody really tries hard to get them there. Police and chambers of commerce are very reluctant to generate bad publicity for their areas by keeping real stats for all the crime.

I'm near the Hungarian border crossing. There are no parking lot shootings here. No mixed up areas. No hoods. The 'poor' areas also feel very safe and clean.

Illegal immigration is not allowed in Hungry. Border and Import Tax Officers examine almost every vehicle here, including taxis buses and foot passengers coming across the borders. The examination rate must be well over 90%. I was told some nights they get spot orders to do 100% searches.

As a result, their cities and villages are beautiful compared to ours. Everyone here seems to think Americans are "rich" and America is a great place. But cannot think of one major American city that comes close to Budapest or Szeged, in spite of the fact they aren't "rich". This country forces you to examine what "rich" really means. Is it a mortgage/rent serf with a $5,000-10,000 month mortgage payment/property taxes, sending their kids to terrible public schools, and shopping down the street from parking lot shootings rich?

I grew up in this tiny shithole town on the near border of Canada. Looking back, everywhere there was wealth. They didn't live in fancy homes, there were no good restaurants, the nearest movie theater was 45 miles away, but there was so much space. I can see the wealth and value now. My complaint back then was the inability to get information and knowledge. That's gone today with the Internet.
