Most of farming in india is tramendously inefficient. If you farm on less than acre, your ROI is barely survivable. Crop yield is low also.
Free water n electricity thru subsidy allows them to survive. They tried to modernize farming to increase production but farmers don't want to change.
farmers have emotional connection so keep farming old ways. They can easily move to city or other areas n find better job n lifestyle.

You can't farm only an acre and survive. That's only 64 by 64 meters, or about 208x208 feet. It would be pretty slim living anyhow for a family.
