Actually the Romans killed Jesus. But the Jews cheered for His execution. And ultimately He was killed as a sacrifice for our sins. So we are all complicit in His death. The thing is He is not a religious leader. He is God. A religious leader seeks to show people the way of salvation, but Jesus Christ is the way of salvation. I’m convinced that God hates religion, it always gets in the way of truly doing Gods will. Saul who became Paul is the prime example. Paul realized his true calling when he gave up his religion.
What about religious leaders who have been murdered by their countrymen? I think Jesus may be the only one.
