A massive home explosion in California’s East Bay sent six people to the hospital Thursday morning, leveling multiple buildings and shaking an entire neighborhood.

Dramatic doorbell-camera footage captured the blast as it ripped through a property near Hayward. ...

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) said it received a report at 7:35 a.m. that a construction crew, unaffiliated with the utility, had struck an underground gas line.

PG&E workers arrived to isolate the damaged portion, but gas continued leaking from multiple locations.

The utility confirmed that workers managed to shut off the flow at 9:25 a.m., yet the explosion still occurred roughly 10 minutes later. ...

PG&E also confirmed that three of its workers were among the injured.

The other three hospitalized individuals were members of the household that exploded and are being treated for third-degree burns, according to a family member.

When I moved back to the bay area in ... 1996 I think after college / my parents moved the family to Texas... My first pad was in Hayward near the 92. Whitman Avenue I think?

Anyhow the bart tracks were right across the street from my bedroom window. Over the 1st 3 months I lived there with my girlfriend I heard gun shots nearby too frequently but really only a handful of times.

I broke the lease early and moved over to San Carlos.

Moving to Hayward was a stupid idea for other reasons, like the biotech jobs were primarily on the peninsula and I'd have to commute over the San Mateo bridge, going the same direction as the majority of traffic.

It was more expensive on the peninsula, by a lot! (channeling Trump) But it was worth moving into a smelly overpriced studio apartment with shag carpet that seemed like it was from the 60s and smelled of wet dog.

Much better than living in the East bay - at least that area of the East bay, there are some incredibly nice areas on the East side but I couldn't afford them.

About 5 years in the neighbor upstairs dumped beans down the drain and flooded my unit with sewage, or what smelled and looked like it. So I got new carpet! The thinnest shit I've seen even to this day but it was new! Felt like I won the lottery or something.

I worked in Hayward for a while. From the business perspective, the place was riddled with drugs and drug users. The clients were very commonly users, addicts, drunks and aggressive drug aggros. This was even moreso than Pittsburg, where I also worked for a while.

It made me think I really did not want to live there, even though the hills have some very nice homes.

There is a large county court there, with law offices all over, and there used to be a branch FBI office, maybe still is. I think a main mall there may have closed down due to too many gangs and punks scaring away the paying customers.

I live about a mile from the Hayward city limit as the crow flies, but it is on a 1500 foot ridge so geographically separate. You have to drive around the hill to go back and forth, which is some distance.

The explosion was said to be a gas line, but you always wonder in a place like Hayward equals meth lab.
