Yes, exactly. All the videos on this site are just a simple .mp4 file. Many other sites have very strange video streaming protocols which make it hard to save the videos.

If you want to go through the pain of it, the Brave web-browser has an option to "inspect" where you can (generally) pick out the video if you spend enough time going through the hierarchy but they are getting clever with that as well.

Really, if you want to record something desperately, you can just record directly from your screen with various tools. It's actually a myth that you get much degradation - it's usually using an FFT, and you don't reduce quality by copying it digitally, even if you're re-encoding it, unless the video quality is lower than the original quality. Something to do with the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem and although I'm (technically) an EE, it's now over my head. Basically, if you sample at the same or higher rate, you don't lose any quality.

Yes, I've managed to download videos by inspecting and slowly figuring out how they are downloading the fragments, but it's real pain, which is probably part of their goal.

Any advice on screen recording? IIRC if you do it on a Mac, you get a .mov file which is not playable in most browsers, and is literally about 10x larger in bytes than a .mp4.

@AmericanKulak Where did you get the original video? The writing is very impressive.

Off twitter, sorry I don't have the precise link.

Pat, now that Twitter has returned to semi-normalcy, do you want to bring back the embed stuff?

Do you mean embedding Tweets on patrick.net?

For something that is too difficult to download, use PowerPoint's screen recording feature. This will get you an mp4 that is as good as your screen display. For sound you will need a microphone that records from speakers (record sound while screen capturing). True, a download is best, but if a download is not possible this method will make a pretty good copy. I did the following video that way (it was low resolution to start with, the copy is the same quality as the on-line original).

How would I save this video in the original post above?

Right click anywhere in the picture and select "Save As."

What about on an iPhone? Why is this not obvious to me?

Yeah, ffmpeg will convert it to mp4.

ffmeg -i INPUT output.mp4

is the simplest incarnation. As a tool, ffmpeg is actually quite bewildering. This is something I would commonly use:

ffmpeg -i INPUT -acodec copy -movflags faststart OUTPUT.MP4

what that does is move the "mov atom" to the beginning of the file, so a web browser doesn't have to skip around to figure out how to play a file. If you don't include it, it will first load up the beginning, and go to the end of the file to find the mov atom, then it will return to the beginning to continue.

There's a BILLION options for ffmpeg.

I have practically all the Looney Tunes from the theaters, when they used to be shorts. That's an artwork that needs to be preserved. My fear with cancel culture is that they earlier works will be forgotten simply because they don't conform to current sensibilities. I think it's important to remember our entire history, and not sugar-coat it, and art is part of our history.

That's a mistake. Complexity is death.

But I'm glad that at least ffmpeg makes it possible to spread information that is otherwise censored by our corrupt government/oligarchy/corporations.

Never thought about someone saving a video on his phone. Phones are so completely controlled by Goople that I never think of using them for anything important. Phones are just a way for the national security state to know where you are at all times, whom you're communicating with, and what you're saying to them. They provide some useful features so that you will willingly submit to being tracked and then hunted down and killed if you become a problem for Pfizer or the other government/organized crime syndicates.

But then what if Twitter suppresses that Tweet? If I just embed it, then you can no longer see what it used to say.

It's really a very complex program, each encoder has different options and you wouldn't have to re-write the program that has a LARGE degree of overlap in order to handle new input and output.

Did you know that Linux frequently uses a program called BusyBox? BusyBox is a huge set of programs, and depending on how it's named, it runs differently. Either symbolic or hard links are used to cause it to invoke different behavior, so rm, ls, fsck, mkdir, etc, are really the same executable.

https://opensource.com/article/21/8/what-busybox

Now why the F would they do this? There's a lot of overlap in the functionality of the programs, so you just load one into memory, and you have a couple hundred commands instantly available. Ffmpeg is kind of like this, it's just a really big jackknife for audio and video transcoding.

With ffmpeg, you can do crazy stuff like take 4 video streams, 10 audio streams, and 40 closed captions, and put them in a single container, while you adjust the pitch and duration of the audio while specifying a preferred output file size. It's not really designed to be used on the command line, it's made to be used by programs I think.

Not just the CGI, but the vocoders are spot on. I imagine you could splice them on to various political actors like Darth Vader's voice box.
30   Patrick   2023 Mar 11, 7:45pm

I'm betting it's fake because no one could be so stupid as to say those things on camera, and it repeats talking points a little too obviously.

Also, it conveniently muddies the water, which is exactly what criminals Pelosi and Schumer want at this point, now that they've been clearly exposed as having slandered the good people who were protesting the obviously fraudulent "election" of 2020.

I don't think Okeef would use Veritas branding anymore.
