NBC Universal, Inc.
More than 100 people are making a federal case out of their refrigerator troubles. They’re suing over fridges that they say failed far faster than they ever expected. Chris Chmura and the NBC Bay Area Responds team recently looked into the issue — including one Redwood City woman who’s had three new fridges in just five years.

Betsy Anderson’s luck with refrigerators stinks as badly as the food she’s tried to keep cold.

“One morning I went to get milk out and it was sour,” said the Redwood City homeowner.

First, a $2,800 Kenmore Elite fridge — with an LG compressor inside — died in late 2019. “It was like 15 months old,” she said. “It basically stopped working. It wasn’t cold.”

Anderson filed for warranty service. But after two months of replacement parts failing, techs canceling service calls, and Thanksgiving approaching, she broke down and bought another fridge: a brand-new LG.

Groundhog day: $2K fridge edition
It only lived four years. “That just died, this year. Same thing. And I didn’t even bother calling them,” Anderson said.

If you’re keeping score, that’s one Redwood City home with two dead fridges in just five years. “Yeah, two,” Anderson said. “Unfortunately, we bought another LG fridge. So, I guess that’s the definition of insanity, right?”

Betsy’s not alone. We searched our nationwide Responds complaint database. Over the past few years, our NBC and Telemundo sister stations around the country have heard from dozens of upset LG and Kenmore owners.

Terese in Philadelphia said her fridge failed when it was “only seven months old.” Bernadette in San Diego said “technicians have been to my home seven times.” That sounds a lot like Kaare in LA’s story… “[The] fix lasted one week. I have had a total of six repair visits and have not had a working refrigerator for two months.”

Some frustrated fridge owners are heading to court.

Fed up and off to federal court
“It’s a nationwide issue,” said Los Angeles attorney Azar Mouzari. She represents plaintiffs who are now suing LG. She says her firm is focused on a critical part called the linear compressor inside LG and some Kenmore refrigerators. “Which is really the heart of the refrigerator," Mouzari said. "It’s what keeps the food cold.”

According to LG literature, the linear compressor uses less energy and makes less noise than other compressors. LG offers a 10-year warranty and, online, boasts “20-year durability.” But Mouzari argues in the lawsuit the linear compressor’s actual lifespan is nowhere near 10 years, let alone 20. Her suit claims they frequently break down far earlier — and LG knows it.

Mouzari is asking a federal judge to make her clients' lawsuit a class action because she believes droves of families are facing the same breakdown. “Thousands, if not tens of thousands,” she said. “We have been inundated with calls.”

Old problem, new claim: fraud
LG previously faced litigation over its refrigerator, including compressor failures. In 2018, LG settled a different, class-action lawsuit. Mouzari’s suit is new. And it makes a new claim: fraud. She argues in the suit that LG is defrauding people like Betsy because it continues to make a linear compressor that falls short of its “20-year durability.”

“We know that they’ve known about this issue. And they know the rate of failure is just unreasonably high,” Mouzari said.

Mouzari also names in her suit several major, national chain stores that sold LG and Kenmore refrigerators. “Because those retailers were aware of the issue,” she explained.

We contacted LG and Kenmore about the lawsuit. LG told our L.A. responds team that the company does not comment on pending litigation. It is fighting the suit in court.

When LG settled the previous class action suit, the agreement said LG, “specifically denies any alleged defect in the LG refrigerators.” Kenmore says it no longer sells refrigerators with an LG compressor.

Mouzari says the new lawsuit is gaining traction.

100+ plaintiffs, so far
“Currently, we have 102 plaintiffs,” she noted. “We are getting calls all the time.”

She wants LG to extend people’s warranties up to 20 years. And refund anyone who says they bought a dud LG or Kenmore after 2018. People like Betsy.

“It’s a tremendous hassle,” she said. “I think they should make it right. And I think they should do a recall like an automaker.”

If you bought an LG or Kenmore refrigerator after 2018, you can contact Mouzari’s firm to learn more about the lawsuit.

I don't know, I've bought cheap and expensive fridges and never had a problem. I've bought two regular fridges with freezer, mini beer fridge and a stand up freezer. They're all 10-20 years with no issues. Still working.

Sometimes user error comes into play. A kid doesn't close the door and it just runs constantly for half the day. Poor electrical wiring.

In a country of probably 350M people now. 102... what a whopper. Classic attorneys looking to screw people over and take 30% and the client can't even get a replacement fridge.

Don't buy LG or Samsung appliances and you won't have this problem. They are famous for breaking. Now I gotta make sure that someone else isn't using LG or Samsung components.
That and don't spend $3000 on an appliance.

Wrong. Double oven. Best appliance ever if you like to cook and live in a cold weather area or host people. And unfortunately good brands cost $3k+. That was our single best splurge when we rehabbed.

Haven't looked at appliances because we're not there, but new oven will probably be $5k now. I need to start looking at this shit... shit.

With fridges it's weird: you either get a good one which would soldier on for a decade or a complete lemon which will wear you down from dealing with incompetent warranty repair techs. Then there is luck: my BIL goes through fridges like they're going out of style. Literally every year or two he buys a new one, suffers all the dealings with the warranty and ditches it when repairs are not covered anymore. Next fridge - same story. He's been through KitchenAid (and Whirlpool), LG, GE and couple of others and currently has a 3-month-old Samsung. Guess what - the ice maker is already acting up.

LG has 10 year warranty on these newfangled "linear compressors". Doesn't include labor, of course, but the part is sure covered. 2 hours of tech's time to replace it would cost something like $100-120. Hardly a life-changing experience, imo. Annoying AF, of course.

Do you really want to be dealing with annual refrigerator repair?
And is that $100-$200 labor change you quoted, is that a made up number or actual quote? Because this isn't 2019 and shit is expensive now.

I have gone through 5 washing machines over the last 14 years. The mechanical parts are all fine, but the mainboards on them break, or other unrelated parts. All a washing machine needs is a motor, a drum, a drive mechanism, relays, and a float switch. All a dryer needs is a motor, drum, belt, thermostat, and a timer. The green boards in these appliances are purely to accelerate planed obsolescence.

I've gone through a few fridges as well. Mostly because door, shelf and ice mechanisms break on them. The fridge itself still kept things nice and cold.

I have never once needed any of these appliances serviced for things you would expect to fail Like parts I described.

My last washer was by LG, which we keep on the back patio. Had wire insulation that must have soy plastic on it, that the yard rats found yummy. Every few months it would stop working and I would open it up and find broken wires all in the upper console. So I stuffed some 000 steel wool in the spaces, where it looked like rats were getting in. But the rats then started gnawing at the plastic around the steel wool and wires, and the wires shorted out on the steel wool and fried the green board.

I would love to find a matching pair of Kenwood or Maytag Washer and Dryer from the 80's, even if they were rusty and beat up. They would run for ever, nothing in them but tangible hardware.
8   Tenpoundbass   2024 Jan 27, 9:15am

I also bought a slide in Stove. I bought the no questions asked warranty from Lowe's because my kids can be rough on things. After the first month, one of my kids was given these colored plaster rocks with little plastic toys inside they are supposed to use a little hammer and break it up to get the toy inside. One of the little ones used the glass cook to to beat the rock on and cracked the stove top.
I called up the warranty center. They told me that the stove comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty, and the one I bought doesn't kick in until that one expires. The manufacture warranty only covers defects. I never buy extended warranties because I have always suspected they are full of shit. .They'll never get me again, and Ill be a rude mean sonofabitch, the next time I'm asked to buy one.

As someone that has repaired many shitty fucked up crappy LG, Samsung, GE and Maytag appliances over the last 14 years. I can promise you that appliance parts are dirt cheap. You can buy most parts with chump change. It's the labor that will cost you $100 an hour.

Yes the Amana and Avanti cheap small fridges we've bought for the porch for beverages and extra fridge space. Never gives us problems.

A friend of mine worked for GE a while ago. He was told point blank by their engineering that they engineer appliances which should break in 5 years because they finance them for 5 years…

I bought a set of speed queens last year. Pricy but old school commercial grade parts - except yeah, they do have boards unfortunately. Most recommended by repair guys though.
13   mell   2024 Jan 27, 11:35am

Boards always break before mechanical part, when they really shouldn't. Electric circuits should last decades
14   RC2006   2024 Jan 27, 11:43am

Chinese compressors are garbage, they, are louder and dont last long.

Just search for any problem with an appliance there are probably at least a dozen videos on how to fix any issue since failures are so common.

There is a class action forming against LG for garbage fridges and the warranty is bs.

Seems like there was one in Canada this past decade for Samsungs too. I saw it on one of the TV shows with a segment on Consumer Alerts! or something. I think it was 20:20.

The only thing I'd buy from LG is their TV (or LG panel in another brand). The only thing I'd buy from Samsung is their phones.

I believe you meant "Kenmore" from Sears. I have had very good luck with Kenmore. My mom's Kenmore fridge, washer and dryer lasted 20 years. Even the Kenmore garbage disposals lasted. As far as "Kenwood," I still have my Kenwood component stereo receiver, dual tape deck, and CD player that I bought 30 years ago, all still working perfectly.

$60 per hour seems to be the going rate in the uber-expensive SF Bay Area.

22   AD   2024 Jan 27, 11:46pm

buy the cheaper refrigerator like Frigidaire for $650

likely it will have a lot lower total cost (purchase price, electric cost, etc.) per year than the more expensive refrigerators

Refurbish how? They probably still work just fine. But your wife wouldn't want one of them ugly things in her kitchen. But as a garage fridge - sure.

I was doing some work on place that had a realestate office that was being turned back into apartments. There was a small kitchen that was walled off for decades that had a fridge from what I guess was the 40s-50s. I went to move it and discovered it was attached to a natural gas line, for fun turned the gas on and and that thing started running I didn't leave it on long enough to see if it got cold. This was in the 90s if I knew what I know now I would have kept it instead of taking it to the dump. It was heavily and the doors and body were twice as thick as modern fridge.

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio washer that I got free from my across the street neighbor 6 years ago. It needed a new bearing set - $150 for the parts, tools and sealant. Just recently, the washer started to unbalance at every load, no way to arrange clothing to prevent it. Turns out the suspension was shot $70 bucks for new parts and problem solved.

As long as there are parts and decent repair manuals/videos, anyone with half a brain and not in a wheelchair can fix this shit.

Or access! I had a stackable washer dryer go out in my Maui condo while I lived in San Diego. It was in fact an easy fix but it was easier (and in the end maybe cheaper) to replace it. I gave the old one to our resident manager so he could sell it to his pal and make some $...

Mostly in my SFH rentals I go through dishwashers and garbage disposals... (Dishwasher in Maui too!)

Then water heaters / AC units.

Then other stupid stuff like broken closet and garage doors.

I have 3 refrigerators (couldn't tell you the brands) that are still kicking after several years. I've had to replace plastic shelves etc...
