My take on sati pratha. Suicide is considered wrong in any religion same as in Hinduism.
But women who wanted to die with their husband were give a way out if they couldn't bear the grief.
When a women wants to commit sati, she had to take permission from everyone in her family. She had to convince everyone that her step is right step for her.
Her family used to worship her for many generations for her bravery.
For islamic invasion it was called Johar. Here women used to jump in fire because even if they died in any means their bodies were violated by islamic hordes as they were famous for necrophilia.

Here is why.
