Fuses, drive-in movies speakers, window crank, IBM Selectric typewriter ball. They were changeable to have different fonts.

I just posted this one on FB with the following text:

Now young people, gather around for another story from Back In The Day.

This here is how we changed fonts in Google Docs or Microsoft Word. We had to buy these and mail them in each time.

Took about a week. Like we had to send film in and wait for our pictures.

So the smarter of us figured out we could use this as an excuse to extend our deadlines for term papers in school:

"Sorry teacher. But I am still waiting for Microsoft to update my Word font!"

True story!

The above is in error.
That's a ball for the IBM Selectric typewriter.

Dot matrix printer from 1983. It had a switch to print in italics. But the whole document was printed in italics!

we used to call them CURB FEELERS. The lowriders and the joggers were still using those in the 70s...BTW, does anyone remember when people would have 2 rubber straps dangling from the chassis and touching the road...something about static electricity?

True story: I hid under one these babies during the Loma Prieta Earthquake. I, a librarian and a little girl. All hell was breaking loose. Encyclopedia Brittanicas were flying all over the place.

All three of us figured out that the card catalogs were the safest places to dive under.

I had a student job there as a page. My shift started at 5pm. I was just starting to take a cart of magazines to shelve when the quake hit at 5:07pm.
