I just read https://sriramk.substack.com/p/group-chats-rule-the-world and it seems like private group chats have real value.

It would not be all that hard to create private group chat on patrick.net, maybe a week of work. So a thread would be designated as private by the author of that thread, and anyone already in the chat could invite any other patrick.net user or even any email address at all to join.

The threads would simply not show up for people not in that private group chat, and be clearly marked as private for those that are in it.

It would be a way to have a conversation without being annoyed by someone with severe TDS, for example.

On the one hand, it feels a bit exclusive, but on the other, it could make conversations more comfortable because they simply wouldn't be public and would be under Chatham House Rule:

Under the Chatham House Rule, anyone who comes to a meeting is free to use information from the discussion, but is not allowed to reveal who made any particular comment. It is designed to increase openness of discussion. The rule is a system for holding debates and discussion panels on controversial topics, named after the London headquarters of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, where the rule originated in June 1927.

On the third hand, there aren't all that many active patrick.net users right now, so would there be any point?

Ideas appreciated.

PS I did propose this years ago: https://patrick.net/post/1303826/2017-03-12-private-group-chat-original-post but don't think it was a popular idea then.

There are a ton of lurkers though. It took me at least 2 years to make my first post I think in 2015, but joined in 2012. I was lurking before that I think as early as 2007.

I just think the site has drifted more towards politics. So by default you lose half the crowd in todays times. Now if everyone is hiding behind private chat, I'm not certain that would help get more active users.

Ultimately up to you and if enough users want it. Kind of seems like the site might morph into a group text type format. Also if there's a disagreement in a private chat/thread, what's to stop someone from copy pasting it into regular threads?

I am not fond of chat. we had a zoom meeting a while ago and I have an accent that some people have trouble with. writing is easier, and you can also re-read it. If someone uses an unusual word, it can even be looked up (happens mostly in crossword puzzles nowadays).

Invite me if it's a good meme chat.

Thanks
