While big government is awful, you also shouldn't have wild animals as pets. I know that sounds hypocritical but I don't think you should have a raccoon living with you or squirrel. It's not remotely close to a dog or cat (I hate cats). If it were we'd have drug sniffing raccoons. Not gonna happen. Just let them live in the wild.
I also don't care about any back story or rescue story. Animals die everyday. Non-purpose bred animals from the wild could also have a host of issues as far as passing disease onto humans and that dip shit human passes it onto to other humans. Fish are about the only wild animal besides dogs I find acceptable to have in a home. Anything else is in the wild and maybe a zoo. Don't like zoos either.
