Anyone afraid of heights? I have one buddy currently that is absolutely gay about it. Won't get on a plane. Won't hike a mountain. I don't get it so trying to comprehend or see if any pat netter has a similar issue.

About to send this person picture from Red Rocks, CO that I took and he'll likely legit get sick looking at it. He won't even drive a car in mountains. That's extreme in my world. I'm not a thrill seeker, but just did zip lining in Mexico and it was a big nothing burger. I don't understand the mentality.

That's a weird one for sure. Not a knock on your daughter. Everyone generally has a fear. I just don't care with regards to me, really don't have a fear. Being up high is not going to kill you unless you're disabled. I hate roller coasters but will still ride them with the kids.

I think it's healthy to get over your fears. I don't know what trauma my buddy has had with heights, but come on man, close the window on a plane and don't look out, problem solved. We've got similar aged kids, and we all get along. Fly somewhere and have a good time. He only drives to Indiana or Wisconsin.

I'm trying to figure out if the fear is legit or he's just a pussy.

I go rock climbing every now and again. When I get to the anchors (even if there's a big, flat terrace to hang out at) I ALWAYS tie into the anchors. My buddy comes off belay and walks around enjoying the summit, and it makes me nervous. Some people are OK with that kind of exposure, others aren't.

When I drive switchbacks in steep mountains (Whitney Portal Road, for example) I'm only comfortable if I'm driving. After being in the passenger seat once or twice on the way down steep mountains (and having a great view of the abyss), I realized there would be no chance of survival if you peeled off the roadbed and cartwheeled to the base.

I had it when I was young, but pushed through it, first climbing trees as far as I could go. I still get vertigo if I stare out and down off a cliff. You have to actively fight against it otherwise it creeps back.

I have the same fear of heights. I've had to work on it my whole life. It's not easy to get over though, I genuinely get dizzy/nauseous/diaphoretic, and it's worse the higher up the elevation. I remember getting freaked out at the Space Needle, but forcing myself to stand on the glass so that the kids wouldn't make fun of me.

As a kid I had a fear of heights and sharks. Funny it is mentioned in first two posts. I got rid of them by facing them. Went shark fishing at night off the coast of San Diego with an uncle and his friends. We caught some blue sharks and it made me realize how dumb my fear was.

The heights one was kind of forced on me. As a teenager during Halloween we egged some cars until one of them stopped, and a guy with a gun jumped out. We had to climb on a roof to get away and the other side to climb down was 3 stories high since the house was on a hill. That forced climb down without time to think about the height made me realize that the real danger was in my mind. After that I would drive by that house and realize how dangerous that way down was.

Not a criticism either. I get a little edgy/anxiety when I'm in the upper deck of a stadium. I fear tripping or missing a step and rolling over the railing.

I don't get my buddy though. He's actually an accomplished horse racer. I know a couple of people that have died from horses and no one that has fallen from anything. So he sits in flat IL and does nothing. That life would bother me.

Newer friend in the last 3 years and I'm like, dude you got to get on a plane again. Even talking about it makes him sick a little bit. I just figured I'd ask some pat netters. I'm not climbing a cliff or antenna tower for sure, but a plane? It seems weird. His kids and my kids get along. It would be a fun group trip. Adults adult and kids goof off.

When snow skiiing, it would take about 30 minutes of panic before the fear of heights would dissipate. I can't get close than four feet from a cliff edge without feeling that it is trying to pull me over.

I read somewhere that the 'free climbing' craze that made me acrophobic just watching apparently has literally died out i.e. so many of the free climbers challenged the odds once too many and died, so very few have attempted to follow suit. I remember the vid of the guy who free climbed Half Dome in Yosemite. Absolutely nuts, but he did it.

I knew a dentist on disability who crushed his hand which turned into a kind of claw from rock climbing and couldn't practice. Another dentist who came to look to buy a big screen TV from me said he couldn't practice because he got into an altercation with a K Mart bouncer and the bouncer wrenched his arm so badly he had permanent nerve and muscle damage. He yelled at the counter person when returning a $15 telephone.

Years ago I saw a crazy kid just climbing the bluff in Santa Cruz fall off about twenty feet. He was seriously injured, couldn't move and ambulance had to cart him away. He landed on relatively soft sand, but flat on his back. I have no idea what happened to him otherwise. It does not take a huge height to result in life altering injury.

Santa Cruz is full of wheelchair palegics of various stripes from all the sports with crazy risks. The next generation are being prepped with the e-bikes. I saw one kid standing up on his e-bike with one foot on the seat, one foot steering going at speed down a hill off Soquel drive while looking at his cell phone. I drive like an old lady with head on a swivel in Santa Cruz with all of the various street activities, wandering homeless, kids running into the street from driveways, skate borders, wobbling tourists on bicycles, and now the e-bikes etc.

Lol. A story I did not expect to read.

I'm confused with my buddy. 1/2 ton animal (horse) you ride versus the safest mode of transportation? Have the window seat close the window and sit on the aisle seat. You wouldn't notice.

Back to your story though about the roof. I'm installing hidden xmas lights so I don't have to go on the roof. Our pitch is not steep, so nothing extreme there. I just like to have some beers while doing it which is admittedly not safe. So I have the option of adding crap like this now.

I have a fear of heights in some situations if there are no ropes or safety backup. I've bungy jumped, fly all the time, repelled down steep slopes. But there are times I get almost paralyzed when getting on roofs, hiking places with huge drops etc.

I hate driving. With a passion and I'm usually in rural areas. I'm usually at a 5 anxiety wise, put me in a big suburb or city and it's a 10. Rural areas it's usually gay bikers (manual) it gay pants and shirts.

Cities and burbs it's just fucking idiots everywhere. I learned my lesson one time and almost got myself killed by a guy (gang banger). So I just white knuckle it and am generally angry while driving.

Going back to heights, anyone sky dive? I have zero interest. Is the thrill worth it? Thought about it but I have massive trust issues.

Zion has angels landing hike. I made it to top but almost shitted in pants coming down. Steep vally both side. 2 to 5 feet to walk in many places.
Like will clear up if you have fear.

-Do hypnotherapy,
-start with low heights then go higher.
- tell him we all die sometime, you can't live with fear.

well that was worth it..He showed the guy who was boss. I take it that you live in santa cruz...I used to live in Fremont and had a GF that lived in los gatos. One time we spent the night in that big hotel on the beach in SC...Another time she took me to a kind of famous bar for younger people in capitola..not a fancy place... more like a place for rockers..Do you know it?

I like to say that I don't have a fear of heights, I have a fear of falling from heights.

There are a couple of places, but I never hung out at them. There's lots of night life and live music, but we don't go there unless somebody visits and wants to go out. It looks like quite a few cougars hang out at the Crow's Nest at the Harbor. The one night stand yutes nurse their hangovers and sniff their fingers at the Harbor Cafe on 7th. Street, but we are generally shut ins at night. Dull and predictable. I like the beach at daylight. After hours, it's lovely to watch the moon over the water, but that's' at risk because the meth heads start stalking.

I have 6 free fall jumps. Fall 1,000 feet, pull ripcord and float 3,000ft to the ground. It scared the hell out of me every time, but Pierre made me do it. Pierre Pressure.

I don't think I could do it. That's one height thing where I'm a solid no unless in an emergency. I don't like fast speeds vertically or horizontal with my body. One mistake and you're for sure dead.
