So I blocked the IP addrs owned by alibaba.com and the extra load went away:

It is possible that posts from a specific country go through .alibaba dot com in order to hide
the specific country.

Each green dot is one request, almost all of which are now being blocked from getting any content, but still make the site a bit slower because of the resources to deal with them. It's been about 24 hours of this. On the other hand, it costs them some resources to do this attack too, so they impose a cost on themselves.
The IP addresses are from Russia, Vietnam, Pakistan, all the usual people on the internet who don't play nice. I've blocked about 40,000 of the IP addresses making bad requests. Hopefully didn't block any legit users. If you get blocked you'll see a message to email me so I can unblock your IP.
I guess someone just doesn't like the messages here. I suppose I should be flattered that they find this site consequential enough to spend time and money attacking it.
