@grok How many non-Europeans have been pope?

There have been three non-European popes in the history of the Catholic Church:

Pope Victor I (reigned 189–199) - Born in the Roman province of Africa, likely in what is now Tunisia.

Pope Miltiades (reigned 311–314) - Also born in the Roman province of Africa, likely in North Africa.

Pope Gelasius I (reigned 492–496) - Born in Rome but of African descent, with origins likely in North Africa.

All three were from North Africa, and no popes from other non-European regions (e.g., Asia, the Americas, or Australia) have been recorded. This is based on historical records of papal origins.

...so not only is Leo XIV the first American pope. He's the first pope not of European or African origin.
