One thing I learned from studying in Germany is that they have viable alternate paths outside the university system. In particular, they have a robust trade school system which trains experts in the mechanics of day-to-day life: electricians, plumbers, HVAC, etc.

And the graduates of these schools can make a decent living, buy a house, and raise children.

So I strongly approve of this comment by Trump:

Absolutely. We will then find a plumber, and electrician, and other very necessary workers, that we now lack. If anything needs to be done at my house, I still rely on the 80 year old husband of a friend. Thankfully, I just discovered the husband of another friend can work on several items as well, even though he is severely disabled. Isn't it sad we have to rely on people like them to come and fix things? The electrician of a nearby town sends 2 school kids and charges 100 bucks an hour (2 minutes over = 2 hours). The person who delivered my fridge refused to come and replace my stove (I had cooked and it had not been cleaned yet, so he considered it too dirty to work on). that is the kind of service we have here. The store where I used to buy now says - out of our premises, out of our care. Call the company who made it.

The housing bust destroyed trades. Gotta be careful with trying to get young men into it though. Pay will be high at first. Wages will drop as more get into it. You have to start a business is the key and be reliable. I'm all for it as of today, but in 5 years if you haven't established yourself it might be a tough life.

I heard the statistic that for every 5 people that retire from the skilled trades, only 2 of these are taken up by new tradesmen.

I don't think the runway is as short as 5 years, but I do think that the opportunities for taking over a respectable business is at most 10 years. That gives highschool-age boys 5 years to level up their skills and another 5 to acquire capital to be their own bosses.

Today, without my prompting, my S24 Samsung "smart" mobile device updated itself to AI. I have a battle keeping my laptop microsoft free, every day. So, if we talk Future Employment... 🦍 let's chat. A.I... & ASI weneva 🤷
Robot hands are at 24 of 28 human hand movements. They already walk, run, climb, carry etc. The Oligarchs want to FLOOD the world with robots for e.v.e.r.y. task.
By 2030 (if we're still here) there'll be robot plumbers, builders, sparkies, chefs, nurses, yada de yada. SUPER INTELLIGENCE, the sum of human knowledge... in your doorbell.
Try this scenario. A planet covering Solar Array, over seas, oceans, once were jungles and/or cities. Hominids hiding from drones, under a greenless sky. Just sayn!
I also predict The Great Ennui. A hollowing out of the human psyche, if we are domesticated by AI. Everything, they will do EVERYTHING more efficiently than us. Jobs? For what?

I was thinking the same about AI and robots. Perhaps some of the last jobs standing will be massage therapists.
