Syria was dominated by an Alawite minority, but it was really the US that overthrew them.

100% agreed. 2 close family friends back then who frequently traveled to Damascus maintained he was more liked than the West was led to believe and Syria mostly prospered under his regime.

There's negotiations ongoing. Mostly over the status of the Druze who are a key ethnic minority and friendly to Israel generally.
