Nothing unusual about British opposition if one knows about the history of the Napoleonic Wars. Every coalition against Napoleon, for almost two decades, included the British. They were willing to crush themselves economically to do it - an existential threat. It's always been a US (and UK!) interest to keep Europe divided, not United. That's been a policy of Britain since the Tudors, with only a brief break in the last few decades, which quickly ended.
A divided Europe is more easily managed and guided into doing the correct things we English speakers want.
