Ladies and gents,

The mainstream media is finally recognizing the end of the housing bubble we sensible folks (A.K.A. bubbleheads A.K.A. JBR) have been talking about for years. I ask you, oh you forward looking mental giants, what's in store next?

Specifically, you economists amongst us, please enlighten us with vital knowledge about current and future inflation, deflation, stagflation, and all other vari-ations.

Oh come all ye Fannie Mae haters, ye Fed idiocy watchers, ye Libertarians, please tell us what's you think is going to happen to the McMansion industrial complex when the bubble blows or deflates.

You entrepreneurs amongst us, please peddle your wacky post-bubble get rich schemes here. You cannot go too low. 1800-BKRPTCY? Realt-Whore escort agency? Don't worry, our minds will follow you wherever you go.

Ha Ha,

Maybe she's like me and never watches TV. Or maybe she DV-R her programs. (I'm grasping at straws here)

59   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:10pm

Another business opportunity would be doomsday money shelters. Be the person who peddles gold on late night TV.

This is the first time I saw that ad.

OK, as a marketer myself, two points here. Either they are trying to make it controversial (bad choice politically!), or they've hired someone who's got his head flushed down the toilet. It is very representative of the reality, but, it totally rubs your target audience the wrong way.

The wife looks too bitchy, the husband too chubby. When people buy homes, they are buying a dream, so focus on the dreamy part, not the bitchy part. As a guy, if I have a wife like this, I will be doubly pissed off watching this ad.

A better ad will be some kind of wild sex on the kitchen floor with the wife while kids sleeping tight upstairs, with a sold sign in the front lawn. That is what gets guys off our butt buying a home.

61   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:18pm

hate to rent,

Give this bad weather cycle another year or two and the CEOs of big tech companies will head for NC, SC, TN, etc.

62   OO   2006 Apr 11, 2:18pm

Or, if an ad is targeting the women audience, it should highlight the competitiveness among women. Perhaps a scene between two women having a casual afternoon tea in a nicely decorated, warm sunroom / family room, engaging in a subtly competitive conversation, highlighting their past as arch rivals from homecoming queen to college boyfriend and all the way to a home, with the homebuyer woman winning a clear upper hand.

That will get you women off your butt buying.

Weiner Germany

Don't you mean Weimar, heh

64   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:18pm

For most Americans, Walmart seems synonymous with cheap.

Perhaps Walmart will sell homes. :)

65   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:19pm

Don’t you mean Weimar, heh

Yes. I was thinking about Wiener (the sausage). Sorry about the typo. :)

66   OO   2006 Apr 11, 2:20pm

No, whiner germany. Weimar Germany is destined to become whiner Germany.

67   Different Sean   2006 Apr 11, 2:21pm

An economist is a gentle man,
with neither sword nor pistol.
He walks along most daintily,
because his balls are crystal.

68   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:21pm

Different Sean, I have misunderestimated you.

69   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:22pm

repo outfits and pawn shops will be everywhere

70   Different Sean   2006 Apr 11, 2:24pm

Wiener actually means 'from Vienna' in German, funnily enough, which is in Austria (not Australia)...

As distinct from Weener, Weezer, Ween, etc....

71   OO   2006 Apr 11, 2:27pm

I am against Walmart in principle, so I won't buy anything there.

90% of the stuff in Walmart can be classified as JUNK, junk made in China that does nothing for you except for killing mother earth. Especially around Xmas time, all those useless cheap "handicraft" or decorative bulbs just piss me off so much, mainly made of plastic, entirely disposable, have 0 artistic or practical value. China is just making whatever the stupid American consumers are willing to buy.

Buying Walmart junk is a psychological sickness.

72   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:28pm

now that is one thing that i will buy from walmart.

Walmart has the uncanny ability to squeeze lower prices from its suppliers... if it starts selling homes...

73   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:30pm

owneroccupier,

THAT is an effective ad, playing to middle America's class aspirations.

74   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:30pm

Buying Walmart junk is a psychological sickness.

I do not buy from Walmart either. I like target better, because it is red. You cannot escape junk made in China.

75   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:32pm

Target is better in a lot of ways. It treats its workers much better and it actually cares about design.

76   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:32pm

I would not buy any junk from walmart. but if they would sell cheap house make out of cheap plastic, imported from china. i will buy it.

No plastic homes please. Glide house imported from Canada is so much nicer.

77   Different Sean   2006 Apr 11, 2:33pm

tell me how to find a rich lady

oh, that's easy....

Century 21 ad criticism

You can thank the behaviourist J.B. Watson for more or less creating psychologically manipulative advertising, after he got kicked out of practising psychology. This was the guy who conditioned an orphaned or abandoned baby called 'albert' in the 1930s by striking a metal bar with a hammer next to him to frighten him in conjunction with some other stimulus as an experiment. He meant to 'uncondition' him later, but lost track of him in the system...

78   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:33pm

No, buy from New Jersey. QuikHouse for half the price of Glide house.

79   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:35pm

Is there a web-site? Do they ship to the Bay Area?

80   OO   2006 Apr 11, 2:35pm

I don't particularly have a problem with made in China, I have a problem with JUNKS made in China.

I salute China for making things of lasting value, just not those Xmas ornamental lightbulbs that won't even last through NY.

81   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:36pm

hey, a house function is to keep me warm and a place for me to sleep… i don’t care how ugly it is. i just need a cheap place to sleep, that it…. plastic home, bring it on….

It must be comfortable and it must have good feng shui. Another important function of a house is to attract wealth.

82   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:37pm

I have a problem with all junk. I hate plastic things (or polycarbonate?). Bring back metal and wood products!

83   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:37pm

Peter P,

Here's the site, but it's made out of shipping containers. http://www.architectureandhygiene.com/quikHouse/quikHouse_main.html

84   Different Sean   2006 Apr 11, 2:38pm

I would not buy any junk from walmart. but if they would sell cheap house make out of cheap plastic, imported from china. i will buy it.

somebody here designed a house made of cardboard as a response to 'affordable housing'. naive architecture student. puts the cart before the horse somewhat, in that housing inflation is land cost, not construction cost - don't they teach them that in the 6 year architecture course? might sog up in the rain a bit too...

85   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:39pm

Here’s the site, but it’s made out of shipping containers.

Somehow I have a feeling that it would be more difficult to get a permit to build a QuikHouse...

86   Different Sean   2006 Apr 11, 2:41pm

I have a problem with JUNKS made in China.

junks are always made in china, they are the standard boat... hey, if they are not making any more of it, why not start huge colonies of junks and houseboats moored out at sea? earthquake proof :) , but not tsunami proof... :(

87   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:41pm

housing inflation is land cost, not construction cost

Very true. Hence the GMC PAD:

Yes, the color is a bit bold, isn't it? However, I've also seen some very nice traditional modernist looking houses constructed out of shipping containers.

Hmm...

90   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:46pm

DS,

That cardboard house actually looks pretty good. If you live in a desert or mediterrean climate, the rain proofing might not be a huge concern. It is meant as temporary housing.

91   OO   2006 Apr 11, 2:46pm

Haha,

the other Century 21 ad targeting FOB Chinese immigrants are entirely off the mark as well.

For one, there are lots of C21 agents who are ethnically Chinese and speak fluent mandarin, why bother featuring a white guy speaking crappy Mandarin that I can't even freakin understand? Also, the FOB Chinese couple act like Japanese, bowing endlessly, perhaps C21 should study the behavioral difference between East Asians before they determine which group to focus on, Japanese won't understand the Mandarin, and Chinese won't identifying with the bowing gesture.

C21 must be desperate. What kind of crappy marketing dept do they have?

92   Peter P   2006 Apr 11, 2:47pm

These guys have some nice designs too:

93   Different Sean   2006 Apr 11, 2:47pm

Hence the GMC PAD

that's very cool. i think i saw something like that in a judge dredd comic strip once tho...

or was it trapper john MD...

94   OO   2006 Apr 11, 2:48pm

And to Americans, it seems C21 is running out of moron customers so they resort to importing morons from overseas.

95   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:48pm

Though for $35,000 AUD, maybe not. I can rent a trailer for much much less.

96   astrid   2006 Apr 11, 2:49pm

"C21 must be desperate. What kind of crappy marketing dept do they have?"

One that doesn't talk to their numerous Shanghai offices.

97   Different Sean   2006 Apr 11, 2:50pm

C21 must be desperate. What kind of crappy marketing dept do they have?

probably use JB Watson Jr Associates - if you go out the back, they're still banging iron bars with hammers next to babies' ears for jollies...
