My wife and I have pretty stringent requirements for our rental units. For the last few years, we've been lucky enough to find places that we like in the Silicon Valley. But now it looks like we're probably going to get kicked out of our current condo --the owner needs to sell. We've got at least until the end of January. Maybe longer, especially if we stay in the place while they're showing, which is on the table.

With a strong preference for nice units, we tend to try to stay out of apartment complexes, and in owner-rented condos. Craigslist has been our usual haunt for hunts past, but it's seeming a bit dryer than usual this time around. Could just be the season, and hopefully things pick up in January, but it's left me wondering if there aren't other good resources out there for upscale rental-hunting in the Bay Area.

I figure if anyone knows something I don't about this particular problem, it's the patrick.net braintrust. Any recommendations or advice welcome.

I rent on the peninsula now and have rented in San Jose. I find Craig's goes up and down - one day to the next there is a ton of good ones, and then nothing but spam. Perhaps the dearth is because of the holiday. I'd keep checking there.

I have also used the mercury news in the past, that's actually how I found my first SJ rental in 2005 or so. Haven't looked there lately but a lot of long time SJ owners probably use the Merc as their go-to rental ad location.

Good luck!

nothing wrong with apartment buildings, some are very nice in fact. go online and read reviews, and even better (since you are in california) there is an official complaint list government keeps about apartment buildings.

So feel free to walk over and read those. It will give you a great deal of what places are good to rent. These are usually better regulated too.
