as of today (Jan 5) $13,357 from 405 backers so far. That is about $33 / person.
I am a little skeptical that Patrick can reach his mark of $100k. But a modest goal of 20-25k is certainly reachable. While this won't let Patrick work on the site full time, it will certainly will cover server/bandwidth costs plus some extra for his time.
Sounds like, selecting news stories is taking up lot of Patrick's time. What would be a better alternative?
- have some thing like Digg / Slashdot, where users submit stories and they get voted up / down by the members. The top stories will show up on front page.
(this will require significant amount of coding, unless there is an free/open-source library/plugin for wordpress)
- select a few moderators and let them promote stories to the front page. This way the work-load is shared among us
