In Japan, most companies have a mandatory retirement age of 60. The system works different over in Japan, with a seniority system being more dominant (promotions, pay, etc.) I thought of this as on a wider scale. In the US especially, is there a fair case for mandatory retirement? Are there fair reasons not to hire older people for a job?

It's much more than a Coincidence, that America is essentially Leaderless in every aspect of government and every industry sector.

The best performing company in the World is at the mercy of a man battling cancer and for his life.
If he goes, so goes iPod and all things Apple.

We quit rewarding experience and seniority years ago. The result has been mandatory incompetence placement in most positions. If I were at retirement age, the last damn thing I would be willing to do, is just let go and leave the outcome and future of my remaining years to the inept shit birds, down at store or on the him.

The plan here nowadays seems to be work the peasants until they die under the yoke. We dont' like setting minimum of retirement ages or wages or anything. If they get too infirm for the current line of work, pack them off to being Walmart greeters.

Many unions in CA still practice seniority system. They get a lot of hell for it, because usually it ends up being last hired first fired without rewarding merit, but rather rewarding simply being there long enough.

Well there was a time, Seniority was quantified by productivity through service, there was a real ROI on every paycheck and bonus.
When that's NOT happening, then there's deeper problems than personnel problems.
More like the ones hiring them or especially the ones they report to.

Some jobs do have mandatory retirement ages: Airline pilots, cops, firefighters, and air traffic controllers. Generally they must retire on their 60th birthday.
