To put this in perspective, there were 13.5 million unemployed people as of March 2011 (as counted by BL&S). So about 1 in every 14 unemployed persons IN AMERICA applied for a job at McDonalds on their national hiring day, and only about 1 in 218 actually got a burger-flipping job. How fucking depressing.
This is a lot of media spin being done with numbers. The reality is that 'Big Number of Jobs Advertised' = 'Big Number of Applicants'. In reality McDs got less then 20 applicants for each job they advertised for. Wow! After national attention/advertising a whopping 20 people showed up to compete for a job. I remember back in the 90's when thousands of people turned out for 3 jobs at the Fire Department in SoCal. 333+ people per position is news. 20 is not.
Fire Dept, jobs pay a lot more than McDonalds jobs. The better they pay, the more applicants you will get.
