Who are the MORONS paying this much?
People rich enough who would care less as to what they are getting into.
Still I always thought rich people had more brains than money- guess the real estate bubble mentality is still alive and well!
Asking 982k in Mountain View/Sunnyvale in a townhome complex called Cuernavaca around the corner from where I rent. I went to the mixer and asked residents what townhomes are selling for which gave me insight. They told me to offer no more than 900k. So probably 800-900k but still way too much. I can buy a place in Santa Cruz and a condo in Santa Clara for that much cash.

Google employees, I suspect. My apartment rent OTOH is now significantly cheaper, corrected for inflation, than when I moved to MtV in 1997.
Perhaps but why pay a million bucks for a townhome when you can drive 5 minutes to Santa Clara and buy the same place for 300k less? I would rather buy in Santa Clara and save the money.
I feel that way basically about all of Silicon Valley and its environs. Rent and real estate is astronomical. Sure- we commute from the East Bay but we're paying 50% less than most people I know who live in SV. The East Bay is only somewhat crazy overpriced.
Wow did not realize the east bay was half cost of Silicon Valley. I should look to rent a condo there for less once my lease is up in Mountain View as long as I can work remote 2-3 days a week for my job. Many people in our office own homes in the east bay and commute 2-3 times a week. Now I know why!

I was probably exaggerating a bit. It is cheaper in the East Bay but its not a steal either. We pay around $1,500 for a house but we've been renting it for 8 years with a nice landlord who doesn't raise the rent. Realistically you're looking at probably $2,000-$2,500 a month for a house. For apartments I'm not sure. I've seen smaller ones for $1,200 or less. Then again I'm not really looking. A decent house is still pushing 500k. Not cheap. But its not the 800k-1 million that seems to asked for homes in Mountain View.
My commute is from the East Bay to Belmont. With the new 92/880 interchange update its about a 30 minute commute each way. Mountain view is quite a bit further up the freeway so I'd imagine it would be another 15-20 minutes from there. Anyway, good luck.
So today while taking a walk new my apartment in Sunnyvale/Mountain View area, I went to an open house for a 2,000 square foot 3 bedroom/2 bath townhome with a tiny yard selling for 982k!!!! Obscene! Considering the $600 HOA fees and tiny yard, I was thinking like WTF almost a million bucks for a friggin townhome? I pay $1600 a month for a huge 1200 1 bedroom condo so this blew my mind.
