Why do guys find farting to be so funny?

Maybe not all guys. But a lot of them. Me included. I'm a grown, mature adult man and yet farting, especially when I do it is still as funny to me as it was when I was 10. In fact I think most males also think it is funny.

Two instances I remember:

1: When I was in gym class as a 3rd grader. Now I was this scrawny little kid back then- the smallest in the class in fact- but that particular day we were all sitting around on the floor as the coach was explaining how to throw a football or something and I let out this HUGE fart. I think sitting on the floor amplified it too because it echoed off the walls. The kids of course thought it was hilarious. In fact I'm snickering to myself writing this.

2: When I was oh- maybe 15 or 16- Dad had some important people over for dinner from work. We were all sitting around the living room, which had wood floors when out of nowhere I let this huge one rip and not only was it amazingly loud but it stunk like you wouldn't believe. I just sat there and nobody said anything, as if nothing had happened. I knew that secretly inside they probably thought it was just as funny as I did but manners told them not to laugh. I had the most difficult time not laughing out loud.

Women totally love farts too. If they didn't they the tradition of hot-boxing your wife wouldn't exist.

Nothing like a couple of wet, splattering farts to be the life of the party.

Lots of humor surrounding the whole act of pooping.

Pinch a loaf - now that is evocative.

Old Farts are the worst

Going back through my old posts and came across this absolute gem.

I got called out on my stupidity(claiming gay men wouldn’t find farts funny), admitted I was wrong once called out, and someone disliked that!

And two people disliked the thread altogether! Amazing!

What I did discover was that during 2014 my posts shifted from the housing market to politics and nearly all my initial political posts were heavily disliked.

Now the politics of Patrick.net have entirely shifted.

Nothing beats laying out a nice wet mud monkey while browsing Patnet!

Humor is merely the unexpected.

A joke will lead you to anticipate a conclusion, and the end of the joke is a severe turn to another conclusion that you feel you should have anticipated. The less anticipated the funnier it is.

Bill Burr is expert at this. He's burned out the part of my brain that used to make me laugh - he's made my mind turn 540 degree turns before. I can't go to a comedy club now because I can't often laugh anymore because I am looking for the punchline and even if I don't find it, I'm not that far off.

So why is a fart funny? It's not expected. The more mundane and serious the situtation is, the funnier it is. You wouldn't laugh if a bunch of kids were playing and one farted, but it's likely you would if a group of military generals were discussing the necessity of engaging in a nuclear war and somebody ripped one.

So, now you know what humor it is. Be as joyless as I am :)

It's most funny when I do it infront of wife and kids. Always brings disgust from wife and pure joy from sons.

Farts aren't funny. You can tell someone a hilarious story about a calamity that happened because of a fart. And most wont even crack a smile. But had they been there, they would still be laughing about it today

Farting is funny, farts no as much.
You're not supposed to fart, nobody expects to hear or smell them. So when one is cut lose out of the blue. Many are laughing at that persons misfortune to chagrin himself.

Humor is the related to the amount of subconscious tension involved in the subject.

Things that make us insecure are also funny. Farting being one of them.

One of my favorite jokes is: "I have two wonderful children - and two out of five isn't bad!"

The tension there is about whether our parents really like us.

Another great joke: "I want to go quietly in my sleep like my grandfather, and not screaming and carrying on like the passengers in his car."

The tension there is about death and how we'll react to it.

Basically, about grim things we have limited control over.
