People were dying in substantial numbers of odd diseases and no one know why. It took years after that to actually identify it. I was working as a stagehand in NY in the 70's and early 80's. I got to see it a lot more than I wanted, including in an ex girlfriend. Very scary stuff in the days before the antiretroviral drugs were developed.
