If this particular technology follows history, it will take 2-3 years before it's any good and 4-5 before it's pretty sweet.
Looking at the iPhone, it took until 2010's iPhone 4 before it got really good as a pocket computer.
Back in the 80s I got several Armitron watches that were unusually thin.
It'd be great for that to have a 24-hr battery life and iPhone 3GS performance in such a tiny form factor.
The funny thing is I'm looking at replacements for my 2006 Mac Pro and I'm shocked to see that Apple's cheapest Mac Mini is faster now, 8+ years later.
Hopefully before the end of the decade the Watch will have a similar development curve, with the watch serving as a proper phone, too, with a BT head accessory for phone use. That's a cool get-up.
It needs to be paired with an iPhone because otherwise it might cannibalize iPhone sales
Apple would love the watch to cannibalize iPhone sales. The actual reason it tethers so much is that if it were more independent there's no way it could get through the day.
Thing is, the watch and phone are still separate segments with only a bit of overlap -- the tiny screen enforces this separation of course.

Samsung Gear S watch is already there as it can be used as an untethered, standalone phone. Not for everyone, but some folks love the fact that they can leave the brick at home.
Post Jobs, apple has dropped the ball and fell short of everything they they've touched. Failing short of any existing offerings in any device market they venture into.
Their Galaxy S5 copy is the marginally the best thing they've done.
Their Apple TV is a disgrace to the digital cord cutting set top box video streaming device world.
I think the Ruku 1.0 was 10xs the device that Apple TV was. Their Phone is just more of Apple trying to do oneupmanship while doing less.
Hey Apple but but but... sometimes Less is still freaking way too less.
Stop listening to the Idiot that said sometimes less is more. I hope he didn't mean all the time when it comes to Apple.
Apple will not stay king of the digital world by trying to half ass it while trying to beat their rivals.

Let's be clear, though, that it's an application for a curved screen that actually makes sense. Screen resolution is about the same as an iPhone 3G/S.
And again, if the South Koreans rule the day, we'll have an alternative to iOS, Android (and Microsoft).
If you can't watch porn on it 24/24, it will flop.
Use the accelerometer to measure hand motion, and sync video action to it.
You'll need a cool app name, Fap Ninja is already taken.

Add to Vicente's idea: Place a small weight in it that charges the watch. Similar to an automatic mechanical watch, but generating electricity.
I must have it because it is new, but I can't figure out what I would do with it. But it's Apple and everyone in the know will have one.
I ordered one right away, but my delivery date is June :(
My wife asked me "Why do you need it"
My answer "I don't know why, I'll figure that out later"
Gentlemen, Apple is God. I don't argue with God.

I'm telling ya man, this could WAY top the Shake Weight!

Just tell her that you are an Apple shareholder. Got to help the cause :).
Me, ordered two Watches, both Stainless Steel.
When late Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he talks much about miniaturization and performance per watt, implying computers are going to get fairly smaller in the future. Notice Apple always talk about thin, and now even the iOS/MacOS X no longer uses skeuomorphic icons... flat and thin... get it? Computers has gone a long way since mainframe, to mini, to micro, to our lap, allow us to hold in our palm, and now wear on our wrist. What's next? You don't want to know.

I do, I do. If it's Apple, can I order it now?
Blood is red because it reflects red light and absorbs green light.
The watch may not do well on planet Vulcan.
Faulty taptic engine slows Apple Watch roll out
A key component of the Apple Watch made by one of two suppliers was found to be defective, prompting Apple Inc. to limit the availability of the highly anticipated new product, according to people familiar with the matter.
The part involved is the so-called taptic engine, designed by Apple AAPL, -0.57% to produce the sensation of being tapped on the wrist. After mass production began in February, reliability testing revealed that some taptic engines supplied by AAC Technologies Holdings Inc., of Shenzhen, China, started to break down over time, the people familiar with the matter said. One of those people said Apple scrapped some completed watches as a result.
That's the disadvantage of getting a new product early. They don't have a chance to fix the bugs. I still want is, and ordering it with an American Express card doubles the warranty period.
That's the disadvantage of getting a new product early. They don't have a chance to fix the bugs.
Shouldn't those bugs be worked out during quality control and product testing before release? Just another example of major corporation trying to cut corners/costs hoping they can get the sheep to accept an inferior product.
I'm sure they do a thorough testing before launching a new product, but the real test always lies with the millions of consumers who will undoubtedly find a flaw. Just think of the flaws in pharmaceutical drugs, some of which are discovered after 20 years. I still get recall notices on cars I have had for several 10 years.
Look....I DONT CARE. Apple is my drug.
Apple Watch Skin Irritation Caused By Users, Apple Says - Apple Watch users have taken to Twitter, Reddit and other sites to complain that their new toy seems to be causing skin redness and irritation. Apple has already responded to the concern, saying simply that Apple Watch users are probably wearing it wrong.
Warning: Thieves will have no problem resetting Apple Watch - Add that to the fact that there is no "Find My Apple Watch" feature and the expensive new device from Apple seems like a tempting theft target.
Could be allergies that some people suffer from.
The Apple watch is a brand new product that will go through a learning curve like all new products do. They will eventually fix it.
Strategist - Apple depends on people like you to buy everything new and improved they put out as soon as they release it regardless of cost or problems for various personal reasons.
It's the new paradigm: the customer pays to beta-test products.
Microsoft was the great innovator in this field in the 1990s: release Windows version, await bug reports from millions of paying testers.
Strategist - Apple depends on people like you to buy everything new and improved they put out as soon as they release it regardless of cost or problems for various personal reasons. Maybe someone should start a 12 step program for Apple buyers/users and in your case maybe an "intervention" is in order.
Look....I DONT CARE. Apple is my drug.
I do dramatize when I refer to Apple. The technology Apple creates is without question, superior. It is simply beautiful, life changing, and works like magic. The iPhone is not just a phone, but hundreds of devices all in one. What a bargain.
Tesla, Google, and Apple are the three companies that are rapidly changing peoples lives the most. I have nothing but the highest of respect and admiration for all three of them.
I must have it because it is new, but I can't figure out what I would do with it. But it's Apple and everyone in the know will have one.

Elvis Costello, singing "All This Useless Beauty," would have been a more appropriate choice.
The Apple Watch, beautiful though it may be in comparison to other smartwatches on the market, is useless in the sense that it isn't even a stand-alone product; it's an iPhone accessory. It needs to be paired with an iPhone for GPS data and WiFi connectivity. It needs to be paired with an iPhone because otherwise it might cannibalize iPhone sales, as the iPhone has done to the iPod.
It's useless in the sense that it's largely redundant. Your iPhone can already tell time and can present a far more useable view of mobile apps. If you already have a watch, chances are it will last far longer on a battery charge than Apple's version.
