You should not notice all that much, maybe a few things will be slightly different, or broken!

Please tell me about broken things: p@patrick.net

Even better, if you know how to fix the broken things, send me a pull request! The source code is all at https://github.com/killelea/node.patrick.net

41   HEY YOU   2017 Aug 22, 3:44pm

How about fixing the bug of Assholes posting threads & comments?

OK, I fixed all the bugs found so far and re-deployed the node version.

Nope. Still has the "new comments" bug.

Tell me more about this bug.

When I post a new comment, it looks OK to me. It doesn't have a comment number, but other than that seems fine.

What do you see? Can you post a screenshot?

1. Read any thread.
2. Post a comment to that thread.
3. Return to patrick.net/
4. The thread where you just posted a comment will be marked "new comments" even though you just read it, including the comment you posted.
44   Dan8267   2017 Aug 22, 4:55pm

Bug is independent of browser used.
45   Patrick   2017 Aug 22, 4:57pm

Thanks, yes it's a bug.
46   anonymous   2017 Aug 22, 6:18pm

When I read a thread like this one and I get to comment #40, you give me two options

Next>>> which takes me back to post 8, but on a new page where I can scroll down to comment #41

Or

Last>>>>> which takes me to the last comment in the thread

How about an option that takes me to the next comment, in this instance, #41?
47   Dan8267   2017 Aug 22, 6:43pm

@Patrick, you should set up URL forwarding rules on the new site so that the old URLs to threads will go to the URLs used by the new site. For example, the path for the Funny Pictures thread on the old site was /1200568/2011-12-09-funny-picture-thread whereas the path on the new site is /post/1200568/funny-picture-thread. Your URL redirection should include the HTTP code for permanent redirect.

Doing this will have several advantages. First internal and external links won't break. Second Google will update its model of your site, keeping your page ranking high. Google does not like broken links. Third, the Google search results won't take users to an error page. Most users will simply close a tab if an error page is shown.
48   Patrick   2017 Aug 22, 6:52pm

Yes, also need to do that.

errc says

The tricky bit there is that I always want a full page of comments (40 comments) to appear, not just one or a few comments. So I do a bit of math to make the pages always start with a comment that will result in a filled page.

So in this case, the next page started with comment 8 so that the page contained the last 40 comments in the thread (8 to 47). The php site actually worked the same way.

Is there a better way to do that?
49   anonymous   2017 Aug 22, 7:22pm

When I'm finished reading comment #40, and I hit next, and you jump me to a page with comments 8-47, is there any way to start me 80% down the page at comment #41?

Or do you expect me to do all the work and scroll down the page myself?

50   Patrick   2017 Aug 22, 7:26pm

I could have logic that says "if you were just on the previous page of comments, and it was not a full page since it was at the beginning, then go to the next unread comment on the next page".

OK, not that hard, on the list.

51   Patrick   2017 Aug 22, 9:30pm

OK, the old site links work now. Not a redirection, just one line of code that adds in /post if the url starts with a number.
So we're back on node, and this link should work: https://patrick.net/1200568/2011-12-09-funny-picture-thread

This is also fixed now. Thanks for pointing it out.

It's the AltLefts fault

All of it

They've single handily ruined everything, while the rest of us sat around mean mugging our computer screens.

If only we could figure out how to defeat the AltLeft and the Media that they control, which is all of it, then us Great Americans can finally have our ideas heard. It will be heaven

59   Dan8267   2017 Aug 23, 7:47am

More bugs.

https://patrick.net/users Cannot read property 'number_format' of undefined

Also, the ban list does not show on the user page. If the ban list is not working, get it up before the trolls take advantage of the bug.

Also, if ignore was implemented, the ignore list is not showing. If not, then some user comments are not being displayed or links to them within a post are not working. Example: https://patrick.net/post/1309217&offset=0#comment-1436424

You shouldn't be using a phone to connect to PatNet. It's just a front for the Dept. of Homeland Security to identify the kind of malcontent delusional fuck off that would engage in domestic terrorism. Do you not remember what happened to Call It Crazy? No one has seen or heard from him in months.

Patnetters are brain dead!
64   Patrick   2017 Aug 23, 9:22am

Ugh, too many things still wrong, so reverting to php site again.

65   WookieMan   2017 Aug 23, 9:26am

Damn. Just got burned on the switch back. 3 paragraphs on electric vehicles that I'll never get back on that AAA post. By the timing of your comment I probably missed it by 2 minutes. No biggie, but it was probably the best writing I've ever done.

66   WookieMan   2017 Aug 23, 7:39pm

This is far fetched I imagine. But is there anyway to display an icon for a post that is actively being commented on? More specifically, a user is typing in a response to a post or comment. Kind of similar to the iphone or other messenger services where you can tell the other person is typing. And maybe a gauge or something to show the response if multiple people are typing responses? Maybe show the number of people typing comments or a speedometer type gauge that goes up as more people are typing? This would be cool in a forum atmosphere like this, probably more effective with a bigger active user base, but I'm guessing it's far fetched as I mentioned.

Obviously a lot of comments on a post show activity. It would just be cool if in real time it showed who was in the act of responding. Could be dumb, but just checking to see if this chunk of shit I was throwing would stick to the wall.

That's actually a brilliant idea, and not all that hard with my newfound javascript skills!

I'll try to do it. But first, I'm bringing ignore back. Almost done with that.

Sorry about the loss of text, but I don't see how it happened. Why should you have lost anything due to the switch? The sites work almost the same. Back button didn't recover it?

I could be wrong, but I think you thought my comment about about the lost comment was Dan (jesus, I've reread this 8 times and I don't know how to word it better). I was typing in a long response in the AAA post from earlier today, that I believe I started on the node version. When I clicked to finalize the post there was some error message about no thread or comment and all my text disappeared. I then came here and saw you said you where switching back because of bugs. So I assume my comment box was on the node version when I started typing and prior to finalizing you switched it back to the php version. I'm guessing I clicked post (or whatever it is) after you switched back to php and that's why the error message came up. No biggie, I ultimately got my wisdom out there in that thread.

69   Patrick   2017 Aug 27, 11:37am

OK, we are back on the node version of the site again.

Fixed every bug I knew about. No doubt there are more. Please comment here about them, or email me at p@patrick.net

Thanks.
70   Patrick   2017 Aug 27, 12:09pm

I keep checking. No ignore,yet?

Ah, that's done now.

You can ignore people by clicking their icon or username and then click "ignore" on their page.
71   Patrick   2017 Aug 27, 2:30pm

I moved the #random link to the header, so you can easily click it over and over to get random posts from the past.

Also, if you ignore someone, you will not see the blinky new comments icon for a post if the ignored user is the most recent commenter in the post:

I can laugh harder at myself than many others can.

@Patrick, you got rid of ban. Tolls being ignored can still comment on the author's thread. Ignore is a worthless function. We need ban.
75   Patrick   2017 Sep 2, 9:29am

Shit, there was a bug stopping some people from posting comments. I think I fixed it, but please let me know right away if such a thing happens to you. Write p@patrick.net

I disagree, it is so much better to just hit ignore and remove all the noise from the excess posters (spammers). A reasonable adult is capable of ignoring trolls. Patnet doesn't need to cater to the safe space crowd.

Ignore and ban are not mutually exclusive.

@Patrick, bring back ban.
