For example, when students were asked whether the First Amendment protects “hate speech,” 4 in 10 said no. This is, of course, incorrect. Speech promoting hatred — or at least, speech perceived as promoting hatred — may be abhorrent, but it is nonetheless constitutionally protected.

Patrick, how do you think it would work if college campuses had an anonymous "uncivil" button and it took only one anonymous student to be "offended: to hide and then 30 days later erase from history any speech deemed offensive?

It's not just any speech, only personal attacks on individual other users.

The previous comment was trying to quote this.

Maybe we need a moderator for comment jail.

While it seems like comments can easily be jailed, is there an easy way to release from jail a comment that has incorrectly or maliciously been sent there? Some people are making the argument that comments could be jailed because someone doesn't like the message, even if the comment is "civil"

Patrick will bust them outa jail soon enough.

@Patrick maybe instead of sending comments directly to jail, they could first be flagged as uncivil, which your bring them to your (or some other moderator's) attention, after which the moderator could send the comment to jail or remove the flag. This way an accusation would be treated skeptically until it is reviewed by someone whose judgment can be trusted.

flagged as uncivil,

Comment jail does a pretty good job.
Most comments in jail belong there. Some plead their innocence but still await judgement. If a user abuses the privelage their uncivil button is disabled.
Seems to work.
If you are arguing to take the uncivil button away from anons Im with you.

All anons should just change their user name to anon_some-128-bit-random-number
some-128-bit-random-number should contain many zeros, which are very hard to count in sequence.

Why would this comment belong in jail then?

Anons don't have the ability to mark "uncivil", just like they can't start threads.

I see many in comment jail that have nothing uncivil about them. I would bet that they were sent there by vengeance or retaliation.

Yes and I don't believe the abuser has had their button taken away. Unless of course someone is lying about not being ironman.

State your proof or you are the one who is lying.

Let's see if this gets jailed for incivility. Debt is NOT slavery! It's an obligation to pay back some money. Slavery is MUCH MUCH worse. I'm sure interviews with former slaves and former debtors would establish this.

The moderator of the topic will be able to free comments from jail, or I can do it.

Patrick, you smell of too much garlic. Please jail this comment for incivility, and then free it. PS I like garlic.

That's kind of scary how little people appreciate rights they never had to fight for. So many countries are in bad shape, because they have no rights. And we Americans here take them for granted.
