Also, if the Iraq invasion happened anyway, neither Gore nor McCain would have told Paul Bremer to "de-baathify" the government, including especially the military. Both Gore and McCain would have known the importance of keeping the Iraqi military under control. Even if Bremer had issued the order on his own, Gore would have listened to the generals and rescinded it, and McCain might have done the same if he had been commander in chief. (Instead, McCain deferred to W's envoy even though the decision was obviously disastrous.)

That was the peak moment of stupidity in Iraq.

everything else would be business as usual.

Yep! Eric Holder continued a bizarre plan to buy legal US firearms at legal Gun Dealers, but then transfer the guns to Cartels. Instead of prosecuting 100s of banksters.

Yeah, when you see someone die at 81 you have to wonder how much longer you really want to work.

I hope that the governor doesn't appoint Cindy McCain

I think it pretty clear that they cut a deal with the gov back in April or May. If Cindy wanted it she will get it. He should have resigned in May to make way for a new elected senator in Nov. but politics over democracy, he knew then he was on the river of no return.

An imperfect man as we all are, and as he himself would often acknowledge, RIP Senator.

Maybe he had to continue to work and not retire because he couldn't afford his bills and collect that $174K salary?

...." What you may not know is that McCain and his wife Cindy sit on a private, but hefty fortune.

He's reportedly worth $16 million, according to Celebritynetworth.com. But that's only a fraction of his wealth — the rest comes from his wife, who is an heiress to Hensley & Co., one of the largest Anheuser-Busch distributors.

She reportedly inherited a major stake in the company and became its chairman when her father, the company's founder, passed away. She currently has a net worth around $200 million. "

oops... maybe not..

I didn't agree with many of McCain's policies and positions over the years, but maintained a certain amount of respect for him.

Still can't figure out Sarah Palin... If not for that and the "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" quip, he had a good shot at POTUS in 2008.

Political differences aside, RIP Mr. McCain.

. Patnet isn't a church, but at times it would be nice to see a little decorum.

The mandatory Reverence and Deification (that great word of Curious2) attitude of the Media got my goat.

It's one thing to say "He was a powerful and controversial Senator whose absence will be felt." and be solemn about it. Had they just done that, nobody would have objected.

It's another thing to say "He was AWESOME! and anybody who disagrees is a TRAITOR! Nevermind the very same people who are telling you this dragged him through the mud in 2008, questioning everything from his patriotism to his mental and emotional fitness, and even suggested he was in league with Racists! Now he's the LION OF THE SENATE, DEFENDER OF THE PEEEEEEE-PUL!"

NOW

"Real" Journalists would be asking Lewis what changed.

I think those two things are what turned off the most voters.

I'm not planning to work much past 55. I want to enjoy the grand kids. I want to enjoy traveling. I want to enjoy anything but trying to earn a paycheck just to survive. I think working into your 60s is insane. 70s? Inhuman.

Have you seen Trump's vacation plans yet where he's spending a week with his buddy, Putin?

Maybe Rachel Maddow will join them...

That's not a photoshop, but the conclusion of an actual 2008 Political Ad.

Stay Classy: 2008 Running Mate Palin apparently dis-invited from Funeral.

She never said anything unkind about McCain in all these years.
