Article didn't tell me how many of these teachers are Republican Socialist union members that are turning down additional taxpayer dollars.
What I don't understand is that nearly 20 years ago, Los Angeles was touted as one of the best schools systems for many factors or metrics like class size, test scores, etc.
The LA Times article in February 2019 says the conditions at LA County Public Schools is poor.
"Honk for higher taxes, and more and more ESL students". I doubt that the school board and teachers union will turn down another effort to raise taxes for public schools.
Retirement medical is spending that is not in the classroom. Same as with underfunded pension liabilities.
This is money spent by districts that is not being spent in the classroom.
Why would anyone want to spend it in the classroom?
No, I mean retirement medical for school district retirees (and their spouses, etc). And their underfunded pension liabilities the school districts are also on the hook for. This is money spent by districts that is not being spent in the classroom.
retirement medical" means healthcare insurance covered by the school system for the school system retirees before they are of medicare age ?
California, New York, etc. should do the same and only replace 10 retirees with no more than 7 new hires.
Unfortunately the pensions, already underfunded, cannot Print Money, and so are kind of like Ponzi schemes. Growth can Paper Over Ponzi Finance. Reducing contributions by reducing headcount will exacerbate the problem. The better approach would be to cash out folks and switch to a 401. But, we know who would howl and say that would "hurt our children".
I would imagine that Piedmont is now a Tiger Mom school, given that the area is now very expensive.
If you did that, you might see some good things going on, not all the bad you point out.

Another thing, there's a lot of diversity in "Asian", it includes Vietnamese, many of those are not Rich Asians. I reckon Vietnamese + Filipino likely outnumber Chindian in the Piedmont enrollment area.
