Why was it torture? For about 6 years my father was a logger in Michigan. We lived way far out. Some of the best years of my life. The best memory for me was walking through the forest with dad on Xmas Eve looking for a Xmas tree. He finally decided to cut off the top of a, what seemed like to me at the time, 100 foot tall pine tree and use that. He dragged that tree back all by himself. He was a mountain man for sure. BORING. It was boring to live there. Nature is great, but you get your fill after 18 years of it. Small towns are a torture in their own, there's no anonymity. Rumors are a constant thing, everybody in town knew X was having an affair, except the spouse.

We went out for Christmas trees too, slogging through the snow.

The torture for me was primarily lack of educational resources and data. I'm built to be an engineer. The first thing I did when I got my license to drive, was go to Watertown and visit the library. It was just frustrating. It wouldn't be bad today. Internet has entirely replaced the need for a library to get access to technical information.

I can see why my parents liked it, but as a kid back in the 1970s, it was just frustrating constantly.

So, you didn't go fishing, tobogganing, climb to the tops of trees, go shooting, swim in creeks, explore, grow a garden, build things (you're an engineer. You could have owned your town at some point maybe), ride horses, ride mini bikes, skip rocks, throw rocks to improve motor skills? I could go on and on. I've never felt as free as I did back then. I imagine it's also because I was young with 0 responsibilities.

If there is no wolves the population of deer is probably way above normal anyway. Yellowstone is a good example of how many deer would be in the area with and without wolves.

It's funny, I understand the appeal of the small town lifestyle now, but I hated it as a kid. I understand the liberal and conservative's thinking too. What other animal is capable and willing to do that? We're stepping up, slowly to be certain, but we're not evil - we just are, and I think, generally, we're good. We will damage ourselves to help other people and even creatures. You experience all this pain and doubt, you think perhaps "we are destroying the planet", we're not - but we may be changing it. Is it really so bad that we remake the world into a garden, into a park?

Heaven is a concept that is well established in every culture. Do you really object the attempt to make it on this planet? Humanity has kindness and empathy that transcends our species, and sometimes we have pets and animals and we give them such a comfortable life, they can transcend it too. Is this evil? We aren't evil, some of us are, but I'm fully convinced that our basic morality is good. We are improving as a species, not just technologically, but morally.

2000 years ago, slavery was a step up - instead of wiping out the conquered men, and taking their women as wives, we simply made them servants. Now, even that is frowned upon. We are constantly morally improving.

There's a few nutcases that think they can be overlords, we'll overthrow them in time. I'm not worried about that. They are sociopathic throwbacks - primitives. The herd marches forward. I think in time the destiny for not only humanity, but the world, is a real garden of Eden.

Our fundamental nature is improving, and by "our" I mean every living thing. We will reach a state of complete symbiosis in time, and if a comet doesn't hit us, or a nuclear war isn't waged by the maniacs, we will reach a state of complete symbiosis. That's what we are clearly moving toward.

Our "nature" is changing, and it's changing for the better. In 2,000 years you and I will be seen as ruthless barbarians. Just think, could you accept seeing people nailed to a cross and left to die through thirst over 3 days? That was crucifixion. What culture would accept this today? We are improving. We're flawed but we are improving.

Lol... don't build if you don't know what you're doing and can be there daily. I've been on site for hundreds of builds from condos, houses and commercial. The amount of fucking around and not working is staggering if you're not watching. It's the same in almost all physical labor industries. Most of the guys were out at the bar last night fucking around until midnight.

Always overbuild. Not size wise, but utility wise. Pipe in behind the walls what you think you "might" need. Electric, gas, HVAC and plumbing are going to be your biggest regrets once you use the space. Size down on bedrooms. No one needs a 20x20 master. Master baths need to be nice. You generally shower, shit and pee every day, make it nice. Back to the bedroom, keep it small(ish), save money and get a nice mattress. Master bedrooms are the biggest waste in a house, you're fucking or sleeping.

I'll start the thread over the summer, but it's going down. We'll be building. I have more experience than most in the realm though and know good builders and have the time to be up their ass if they're fucking around. This will be custom too, so more headaches, but your time is probably the biggest factor in building. Ours will be 3 blocks away, can walk over any time and I'll be doing some of the trades I know how to do to cut costs.

My old man was a complete ass hole, but I've helped build two of our family houses. I could honestly do it all, but I'm sticking with the things I enjoy. Low voltage stuff, pool equipment, electric (placement more than anything), home theater and jam room. I'll communicate with the builder, but I'll be tinkering around most nights adding my own shit to the house until 2am. I 100% will not paint or do plumbing. I can, but fuck that.
