I got a letter from an agency for unpaid debt ($500)a month back. The debt is over charges that are disputed. The agency is mentioning that i'll be responsible for all the legal fees involved during debt collection... Can the legal fees run into thousands ( purposefully) and then forced upon me ?

Pay your bills, deadbeat!

Do not, repeat DO NOT talk to bill collectors. EVER!

Just hang up. When you're ready to pay, or have to pay to get a loan.

You call them, you'll also get the best deal if you reach out. VS them reaching out to you. When they are reaching out to you, the guy on the other end is looking for a payday for him as well. When you call them, and try to speak to the HMFIC, now you're that much closer to where the buck stops. That person can negotiate with you, and can go lower than anyone that called you. Often much lower than the original debt was in the first place.

When I bought my house in 2010, I had to pay off a few things that was left on my credit from when my credit went south. This was the only debt from 2001 that managed to get a judgement(in another state) so I had to pay it.

I did pay off all of the accounts that the original debt holders didn't sell to the acquisition firms. Macy's, TMobile and another I don't remember.

I still get calls from time to time from some Bill Stalker. I just got one this morning. You can always tell, they ask for me by my formal name. Then they act all protective, when I ask them what is the nature of the call. Then they'll act like "Ha ha gotcha" by saying. "OK so I'm going to assume you're Mr. Soinso." Then I just say, "And I'll just assume you're phishing" then hang up.

Legally they can't call you back straight away or it's harassment.

If you talk to them anything you say at all, could be construed as you are willing to work out a payment with them, or is willing to pay it. It's best to just get them off the phone. If it's old debt there's not much they can do.

I would gladly pay original creditors, I refuse to pay these leeches and scumbags, that take a $120.00 debt then try to squeeze $1200 or more out of it.

Everything else was past the limit that bill collectors could collect. But that doesn't stop them from trying

Take advantage of your caller ID. When you know its a bill collecter answer andask them to hold while you get the person they are looking for (especially if its you). Then place the phone on the counter next to your computer speaker preset to play the annoying soundtrack of your choice for his/her listening pleasure:

Airhorn
Small dog yapping
Screaming baby
Cheesy 1970s porn
Nails across a chalkboard
Diarrhea attack with toilet flushing
Motorcycle revving
BofAs phone tree hell.

Use your imagination.

Intersersed with that have your voice come on every couple of minutes to ask them to continue holding. Make a game of it, see how much of their time you can waste.

Ha Ha... That was the first thing I thought when I read his post....

Are you both this way in internet forums or are you the same in real life ?
Did you guys not read the paragraph completely before "jumping" to conclusions ? I said the charges are "DISPUTED" ...did you not get it or are you the type who has zero self respect and pays anyone who coerces you into paying unfair and disputed charges !

thanks others who gave useful info.
