Ralph Stanley performed several times at San Francisco's Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass festival, including last year. From the stage, he said to the vast audience, "We want you to know that we love you all." Having worked nearly his whole life, Mr. Stanley made a point of introducing his grandson, recording artist Nathan Stanley:
I'm very Proud of my grandson Nathan. He is a wonderful entertainer and a mighty fine singer. I know as long as he is around my music will never die."
"One of the early leaders of bluegrass music, Ralph Stanley, has died at age 89. His death was announced by his grandson Nathan Stanley; Stanley's publicist said in a statement that the cause was complications from skin cancer.
