Hi guys,

I'm looking over my portfolio this week (both 401K retirement and personal brokerage account) and looking ahead at what to invest in during 2016.

I see that the market correction that we had in late Jan - early Feb '16 is behind us and once again the Dow, Nasdaq, and the S&P500 are near historical high levels. As a result, I'm going to pull some of the money I have here and continue to watch the fed.

I see precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) have been surging since Feb but still significantly below their 1yr and 2yr highs. Depending on where you believe oil is going, some are arguing it's a bargain right now too but oil isn't likely to do much in the short term. Long term treasury bonds had a strong year. Healthcare & Financial sectors haven't performed too well in the past year but Utilities & Telecom sectors have brought modest returns.

I'm interested in getting into a discussion regarding patrick.net's hot picks are for 2016 and where are people are putting their money in terms of market investment today.

Now that Bay Area home prices have surpassed a level that's attractive to most investors, some of us are looking at other investment options.

Logan, any ideas what the major homebuilder companies are?

Logan, Im not sure I want any part of ATEN.

Well, When we first talked about ATEN it was in the 5's low 6's I believe

Much different at $10.50 now

MASI just hit $60 all time high

TWTR at $22.20 now finally being sold

GPRO is over $16 now

As you know when I went on CNBC last year I was very bearish on TOL near $38 and all the builders before the correction actually happened, but in Jan, TOL the builder was back to 2013 pricing, that was the time to get in... even TOL

But ... KBH was the only call builder I said here when it was at $10 but that is now at $15.77

LEN, DHI, are the better builders, Jan was really the time in to get in, builders have been better trades than investment, even now TOL is no where near $38 when I said to be cautious

Logan - what's new...haven't been reading here ...too busy

Anyone got any thoughts on AAPL?

131   anonymous   2016 Oct 3, 8:34pm

Or WFC?

Wells has taken a beating. Moreso recently with the scandal. But it's not going anywhere and the dividend is decent

132   BayArea   2016 Oct 3, 8:37pm

I don't know but ARLP keeps a smile on my face lately

WTW - This stock had the greatest short covering rally I have ever seen in my life
TWTR - This was another good call, badly loved and very much hated
GPRO - This trade is going as plan, dumped some at $14 letting the rest ride to $18
MASI - Number 1 stock I hold, trade, invest ... all time high roughly now
UNXL - Awesome trade this year
ATEN - looking to dump some over $11
Z - out

HP still have small position

DB, stop loss on that one out

No new ideas as of now

Unless you have a position and are holding for the dividends, I'd sell and find smaller nimbler fish. The 5 year chart should speak volumes for this former darling. Wish we could "Make Apple Great Again" ... but I don't think the company will do that for awhile. Likely topping in their business cycle before they begin to trim down, burn, and then re-invent themselves again from the ashes. I expect we see real outwards signs of that matured/peaked business cycle in 1-2 years.

My 2 cents ... and full disclosure, I sold a large position in AAPL recently.

Thanks for sharing! Hope all else is well too...

I can't believe these home prices - when I bought in 2011 everyone here made jokes like..."hurry or you will be priced out.."
Crazy thing is, I couldn't afford to buy my own house now and would indeed be priced out.

Apple at $92 looked like a solid support area, now play up to $120... not a good risk/reward play here

141   _   2016 Oct 5, 8:07am

Did take 28% off the TWTR trade today, just to hedge the bets if the buy out turns off bad...

142   anonymous   2016 Oct 5, 4:51pm

Yeah, I have options on APPLE, bought them at 3.5 and didn't take my profit at $6.50, now we are back to $4...I am counting on thanksgiving and xmas - 117 is all I need

The recent iOS10 is awesome. Best OS upgrade ever. Phone is way faster and super snappy. That is the old phone. The new one screams...new watch is cool too.

143   anonymous   2016 Oct 12, 11:22am

Booyah!! Go AAPL!

144   anonymous   2016 Oct 12, 11:23am

that was quicker then expected - thanks samsung

145   Patrick   2016 Oct 12, 1:15pm

Bought RYKKY on a whim because I really like their stores and their numbers are not awful.

Bought SHOP because I used to work at a competitor and all the competitor ever talked about was trying to beat Shopify. Revenue has been doubling each year.

VRX

NFLX

TGT

I admit I am MASI heavy... but the stock only took off in 2015

NFLX - you wish you still had that sucker eh?

147   BayArea   2016 Nov 7, 9:30am

Nothing too impressive from MASI since August, VRX is looking ugly, NFLX is killin it as usual, and pass the Tums for TGT.

Question is, what do with GPRO as it's nearing single digits again...

148   _   2016 Nov 7, 9:47am

BayArea says

MASI

MASI sold some more today only 100
GPRO same game plan as before
Sold at 14, never hit 18 my target, close but not there
Under $11 position build for same trade 10.96 purchase today small 700 shares
ATEN at 6.82 purchase

I buy MASI every month, small

Only big position I have this year was 2,500 at 37.84 for MASI

200 at 20.19
800 at 21.69
800 at 19.90

What I have left from the bigger lot

60 area looks like strong resistance

Good news from the company today, settled with Phillips 300 Million cash and a partnership deal

Good looking chart since late 2014... but needs to consolidate at least before another big run

149   _   2016 Nov 7, 9:50am

Look at a 3 year and 3 month MASI you can see what I mean...

150   _   2016 Nov 7, 9:56am

WTW, ATEN, TWTR, GPRO, MASI, only things I have right now, in the trading account .. Still have a very small position in UNXL left nothing but build to trade later position there, not much beta

out of HP entirely

WTW sold some today 500

Major short build up in that company sell the rips on the cover points on that, keep a solid stop loss there, company is very iffy

TWTR has been a great trading stock, on hold with that for now

Might look at FIT ... need to do more work on there that's the only new stock I would say that has caught my eye

I got stop loss out on all those, have to stick to discipline

152   BayArea   2016 Nov 7, 10:18am

I'm on the fence whether to jump into GPRO... they are still a good ways away from their 52wk low and their media coverage this week has been very grim.

Falling knife? If it falls into single digits it will be very tempting.

Falling knife? If it falls into single digits it will be very tempting.

With that thesis ... look at it this way

Hardware company, valuation $8- $11 at most without hitting their metrics

Look at Friday's action, If I wasn't busy that is where I would have bought

Had $9 handle and stock went positive intrada day... double test successful off the real bad quarter

I was looking for a $9 - $18 4Q push into the launch of the product line , they blew that..

People are looking to play that trade again

$9-$10 level held, so no falling knife thesis here.

Breaks under $8 brand new ball game then

But so far the line held last Friday

What? Why are you suddenly chart averse?

If you look at the charts you can see what I mean

This has been a great stock to own since late 2014, but in a 3 month line you can see resistance at $60 ... break through that... closing 60.46 now

This has already gone way above my expectations.

However, I'm not day trading this, I have active long positions from earlier levels. So, I look at this differently that any of you would

My selling points have been these levels

( Not counting today and last Friday) 100 shares each

09/20/2016 09/20/2016 100 $59.3500
08/26/2016 08/26/2016 100 $59.0450
08/22/2016 08/22/2016 200 $58.1775
08/04/2016 08/04/2016 200 $56.0940
07/14/2016 07/14/2016 200 $53.1160
06/08/2016 06/08/2016 200 $52.1555
05/16/2016 05/16/2016 400 $48.0545
04/25/2016 04/25/2016 200 $43.3010
03/21/2016 03/21/2016 590 $40.0150
03/21/2016 03/21/2016 1,000 $40.12
07/22/2015 07/22/2015 1,000 $42.25

Need to see break through $60 level to get short term bullish, if you're playing that trade, which was the response to

In again, If it gets to 9 one more buy... that's it

Very similar to previous trade, I wouldn't touch it over $11

Hardware company $8 fair value this is a Q2 2017 Play

That limits though trading opportunities

ya probably smart...

Fitbit is also attractive as you pointed out... shoooooort term though

77% down on the year, ugh.

166   _   2016 Nov 10, 8:53am

BayArea says

shoooooort term though

Very small ( this thing can fall to below 5) with one bad report...

Before getting in bigger, need to see a stable area ... even though that might take some time, it prevents falling knife thesis ...

TWTR at 14
GPRO at 9-11
ATEN at 4-6

Takes time and a lot discipline ... but it does prevent from wasting capital.

Obvious long term investment thesis is much different than this above

167   BayArea   2016 Nov 10, 8:59am

I'm starring at all the charts and totally undecided between TLSA, FIT, and GPRO at the moment. Hmmmmmm

Market is flirting with historic highs today
