I buy "function" but I also buy "looks". My first iMac replaced a PC in the office. The PC was only used for emails, some browsing, printing out stuff and quickbooks...the iMac replaced the PC in that function. But the selling point was that it looked frigging killer. Instead of the INSANE cable clutter. Just one screen, keyboard, mouse. Just one example.

It's a free market - you buy what you want. If you don't like the price tag on an iPhone...get a samsung. It might blow up and burn your house down...but it functions the same way, mostly. Or the chinese "iPhone" killer. Can't think of the name now...H something... - I don't think apple is no longer 2-3 times the price of anything that is comparable.

The watch - I am not a watch person, haven't had one in 15 years. I thought the first gen was "meh". Didn't buy it. But I grabbed this one now because I found use for sports tracking and its water proof which is a big deal as I surf 4 times a week. I can't believe I am saying it...I love this thing. But the most important part - none of the other watches have a "cool" look. They all have the nerdy look. Like 1980 calculator style watches for the nerd in school. Apple just gets the "fashion" aspect right. The design aspect.

But you have to be somebody that appreciates Design. I do. If you are a pure "functions" type then maybe its not for you.

The problem in Berkeley comes down to this: way too much free time for young people who don't have to work for a living.

There's nothing in those videos that is worth getting particularly worked up about. Some slightly hot under the collar students who look like they wouldn't say boo to a goose. I'm sure some bad things happened there, but those 2 videos are hardly damning stuff.

The US has had two full centuries. The 19th and the 20th. The entire 19th and most of the 20th was vociferous, snarling competing multiple daily newspapers - often 3 major dailies in even a small city like Binghampton or Pittsburgh - with their own narratives.

The Consolidated, Multinational Corporate Oligarchical Media Empires of today did not exist.

It's a lot like Free Trade - a policy or situation is made out to be traditional and normal, when it's the exception to the rule. Normal and Traditional, from the 18th to late-mid 20th Century, is a largely across the board 20-35% Tariff on most foreign manufactures, sometimes even books and journals..

Word is the Mayor wanted the Cops to stand down entirely and didn't even want a thin screen of cops. Rumor that FBI might open civil rights investigation against Berkeley Mayor, but that would be too much to hope for.
