This is my high school. 2 to 3 kids per year graduate with a perfect A record. This kid is smart, only one B in high school. I'll bet he was in the top 5 of his class. Notice they left out his SAT score. He's also black, and a radical left political activist. Therefore he was not only accepted everywhere he applied w full scholarship, but he has full adoring media in tow.

The big issue is, this is not even statistically possible for a white or an asian student. These admission policies actually benefit upper middle class minority applicants and yields absolutely zero in leveling the playing field. Kids from the inner cities get nothing.

Of course not. There's a white and/or asian student ahead of this kid in his own class, who also probably has a higher SAT score, sitting at home w one ivy league acceptance letter, no money, and no publicity.

The kid is news worthy because he is an anomaly and the media is over blowing positive things about minorities at the moment. It’s about the same as a dog that can ride a skateboard or a guy with downs getting a pilots license.

It only hurts blacks. All of the affirmative action BS in schools just puts doubts into the minds of employers and then people complain about blacks that graduate from college that can’t find a job. It’s a real disservice to blacks that are really smart, high achievers that deserve to be successful.

As @Patrick noted in another thread, if deciding based on credentials a smart consumer would choose a straight male Asian doctor EVERY TIME. They have to consistently perform higher than every group to have the credentials.

Show me the Asian or conservative kid who CNN wrote an article about regarding college admission, or just show me the Asian or conservative kid who got into the 20 elite colleges without either valedictorian rank or perfect SAT score.

I'm trying to channel the psychology of the writers who think they are doing something good with this story.

What is the real underlying motive? They'd say to themselves, "Well, black kids generally accomplish so little that they get discouraged, and so they need this role model, and I'm going to use what power I have at CNN to displace other potential stories about white or Asian kids and push this one."

So the existence of the story itself can be seen as an admission that this black kid is the exception that proves the rule of low achievement, which is not necessarily encouraging.

The fact that the story is written by two women is also telling. I sense a kind of "mothering" attitude that men would be much less likely to have.

The writers could be justified in this article considering he was accepted WITH FULL SCHOLARSHIP RIDE to 20 universities. Is it perhaps more of an indictment of the systemic bias within the university system?

The kid checked all the right boxes 1) Black. 2) Political activist for social justice 3) Self-appointed role model. 4) top 1% of his class. I can just imagine his entrance exam. There isn't an admissions office in the country who wouldn't boot the 5th perfect SAT or 10th valedictorian Asians off their acceptance list for this budding black political activist.

Nah, they're Asian, fuck them. We expect Asians to be smart and hard working. Why acknowledge them?

We live in a society where amazing repeat acts of high performance are ignored, to celebrate an almost singular uncommon success of another group.

If this kid came from the ghetto, and I have no idea if he did, he deserves his just props because that's a huge hurdle. Most of the time, theses stories involve an upper middle class black kid who the deck wasn't stacked against at all.
