Wikipedia defines the word as "The eschaton is a time period described in eschatological writings and doomsday scenarios. "
Left Wing Eschatons have been around since the early 20th Century:
* The lower classes are breeding to much, must be sterilized en masse and abortion legalized - 1900s-1940s, discredited by Hitler. Main Proponents included Margeret Sanger.
* We're going to have a Global Famine/Resource Shortage - 1960s-1980s. Main proponent, and popular well into the 90s: Paul Ehrlich
* The Ice Age is coming, potentially accelerated by the end of the Ozone Layer, deforesting, and certain particulates in the low atmosphere found in smog - 1960s-1970s. Main Proponents included NASA and Land Grant University PhDs.
* Current: Global Warming from CO2 emissions. 1980s-Today.
Eschatons are like diet fads. There is always a gullible enough large segment of the population who will buy the book and believe it. Paranoia sells. Good sociopaths can jump on the bandwagon and profit mightily.
The problem is keeping them out of your hair while they run around hysterically in their robes and end of the world sandwich boards with their faddish paranoias. They've always been around, but the fact that they have determinative political power under the tutelage of monied interests and the press now is the scary part.
It is more about subversion of society and cornering power over populations and resources.
There is definitely a religious aspect to left wing ideology.
Because they are looking to burn heretics and witches to enforce conformity to gain their secular salvation. Free thought is a threat, unquestioned dogmatic belief is required.
If climate change were such a threat: Bernie Sanders would have solar panels on his 3 houses The Obamas would sell their Martha’s Vineyard mansion on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean Mayor Pete would stop flying all over the country in private jets.
That and we have a global obesity crisis. 3rd rank countries like Guatemala had 7% Obesity in the 1970s, mostly confined to the elderly. Now it's around 30%.
There is definitely a religious aspect to left wing ideology.
I think it's mourning for the loss of Christianity in a way.
Maybe the X-Files was right: There's a coterie of aliens trying to reduce the Human THREAT by depopulating us, reducing fertility, increasing mental illness, and attacking the sex that creates 99% of all technological innovation. Only certain humans brainwashed by them are allowed into leadership.

It's always the fault of Man's Freedom, though.
