911 calls and ambulance we pay taxes for, should be free, but fucks charge you $900. Fucking charge you twice, than bitch about private sector that doesn't do that shit!

To not totally highjack the OP, you have to charge something for public transit... anything. In places like Chicago these places are warm(ish), so you'd literally destroy the system with shitheads trying to stay warm. Also, if it's free, I think most systems would be overwhelmed. People that wouldn't use it, would start doing so. Admittedly I read the headline and not the article, so I could be talking out my ass here.

I rode for free last Friday.
I didn't realize it till today: my fare card still had the value on it that I was supposed to use on Friday. It means i forgot to tag the card on Friday.
Good thing the fare inspectors weren't around.
