CA seems terrible to raise kids. I honestly am at a loss. I don’t know what state is family friendly and not into promoting all the degenerate crap to children.

My 1st reaction is Boise sucks to the high heavens and a very dangerous place to live, stay out!!!

However, I currently live in the country about 45min from Boise itself not to far from Ontario, Or and have basically lived in this state most my life. I lived and worked in Boise all through the 80s and 90s and in 2000 started migrating out of the city wanting my own air to breath so to speak moving west of Boise city, to Star then Middleton now near a small town called New Plymouth. I'm sure your life style choices and such are a bit diff. then my own.

Treasure Valley (Boise and surrounding towns) is a phenomenal place to live, natural recreation of most any sort depending on the direction you roll. Green belts by the miles and lots of community supported activities. Knowing what I know I would be considering the towns mentioned N. West of Boise, Eagle, Star, Middleton along the foothills on 1 side and Boise river on the other, if you are not looking to live more in the city itself ( Boise/Meridian) I thought I read you would like a bit of space. There is a nice small sub going in about a mile from my place, don't know a lot about it but think it's custom builds the lots are 2-3 acres, private wells etc and hear New Plymouth has fantastic school system, small being the city pop is <2k where the country pumpkins get their education. ;) Lots of wineries, craft/micro breweries and we do have lotteries, and fairly close casinos Jack Pot NV for 1 and speaking of pot I live with/in 20mis of several pot shops in OR. however ISP frowns on Idahoans transporting across boarders ;)

Interesting school environments around:

I know a case at my nearby HS comes under Fremont union, some kids 3 years ago created a kill list of all Africa American kids who are a very small minority. These lengthy conversations took place on social media. Some how it ended up on kron4 tv channel news. School and police investigation found that "no names" were used so no action has taken on the final 6 suspects. One of the African American girl still fights for justice at change.org.

I know few more like this kind of bullying. I learned from mine and other that school is very defensive and trying to frame and put victim in defense position and push back to maintain its reputation. Any evidence you provide is not good enough to take any action. Not sure if this is how schools operate elsewhere.

Most of these kids were born and raised here and has no exposure to any tough neighborhoods like lots of other places. But still some are very toxic that once I found in social media channels of school clubs after an alert from my child. One of the club "VP", who is an Asian Indian descendant use "you n...r" (n word) in almost in every message on daily club chat for 6 months! Also he posted more explicit sexual messages on a group of 85 kids of both boys and girls.I copied the thread and gave it to school and was told they will take care but no apparent change happened and that person ended up at uc sb. School like the result and careless on behavior.

Note, most of these kids parents are rich and can afford to send their attorney to school to deal with school. At least I know a case where a Caucasian parent sent his attorney when his girl was discriminated.

At the same time, because of the pressure or other factors most of these kids doing fine and excel in both academic and profession I guess.

for its continued declining tax rates. I looked up one of the property tax rate is less than 0.1%. Statistically speaking, they're living on tax free but get all state services at expense of every other loser in the state.

I don't know how it works in the long run, but valley still provides opportunities for immigrants who can compromise quality of life. If I'm not an immigrant, I'd seriously consider moving away from valley or at least move to suburbs.

The positive side of the virus is creating opportunities for folks who live in places far away from the valley including other states.

We are looking at the houses by Rocky Mountain High School around Chinden blvd and Linder road. My wife's friend moved there from the same city we live in now and loves the area and schools plus it would be nice to be close to one person that we know already our kids are all the same age range. I would like a larger piece of land but wife wants to be close to work/ and be more centrally located. We are also looking at Star and Eagle area.

Wife's friends always screw things up ;) That area is nice use to be most all farm land not that many years ago now it's just fields of subdivisions and commerce of 1 type or the other. I'm sure you will find a great place to live that's a decent area most buildings and such being less the 20yrs old, a few older subs but most are fairly new. that school is only about 12yrs old. So they try and change the previous normal to something close to CA, but not full blown CA. Even 50% CA policies and ideas suck ass. It destroyed Bozeman, MT over the last 5 years or so. I wish I could live further out, my son asked me if we move can we shoot in our back yard l if we move, sad to tell him no unless we move further out. There are a few back rds near unpopulated foothills that we see people sighting their rifles and target practicing all the time, most everyday near my direction of the valley Sand Hollow Rd. .and Little Freeze Out Rd

Got keys, hour after moving in neighbors came by and brought us cookies and helped me unload small trailer with piano. So many things are different. Freeway speed limit is 80! Way less nanny laws. Kids can start driving at 14.5yo.

The wife and have been looking at Boise, Sandpoint and Coeur D'Alene. We wanted easy access to the outdoors for hiking, and skiing would be a plus as well. It's all relative, but IMHO, these areas have already been discovered. From a bang for the buck perspective for a nice home on a good piece of land, you are going to have to move farther out in the periphery, which isn't necessariy a bad thing. But living centrally in these areas, you are not going to find increadible prices any more. Too many relocated Californians. And central Boise is a lot of early 1900 homes that flippers have dressed up and now expect insane prices for. I suppose if you are handy, you can buy a 1920's Craftsman and fix up yourself.

Bend, OR also has already been discovered. Too late. We are looking at other mountain locales, but so are other folks who have cashed out or are cashing out from the insanely priced RE and liberal policy destroyed areas. From a pricing perspective, it is a matter of getting in on the upward slope and not the peak.

I don't look at housing up there, but these areas are awesome. I'd buy there for sure. Had a delayed flight and SW lost my god damn snowboard (not really their fault, ran to the connecting flight in Vegas just to make it) so didn't get to snowboard up in Sandpoint. Forget the resort name. Was gonna do a rental, but said fuck it. Did drive up there and it looked nice.

You also have some great places to go with relatively short drive. Glacier NP. Yellowstone NP is ~7 hours. Fuck tons of state and national forests. Winters can suck, but never understood why it's not more popular. First time I drove through was when I was 18 and it hasn't changed a ton from what I recall. If you can deal with winter those would be my go to places.

Effing COLD in Winter. And Bleak. Can be pretty hot in summer too.

Is that a bad thing though? Cold is a character builder. Fun activities to do in the cold too. Went ice fishing with my buddies for the first time in Montana this last winter. With the equipment out there now, it's a blast. You're not cold at all. It's an adventure. Drink some beers and catch some fish. I personally like the change of seasons, just wish there were closer big mountains in IL for snowboarding.

My biggest issue is sun. Getting dark at 4:30pm local is shitty. Messes with me. I can handle the cold though.

Yeah. That's one of the draws of living in Northern California. All winter long, we can go to the Sierras for that when we want to, and stay home when we don't want to.

I get the appeal of CA for sure. You're a short drive to some great skiing/boarding but live in a temperate climate at home. Wife and I have looked at relocating out there multiple times now. It just doesn't make sense to do it for weather and activities. You sleep 6-8 hours a day. Work another 8-10. By the time you deal with traffic, fires, taxes, high cost of living, regulations, etc it makes little to zero sense to live in CA.

Idaho is very appealing. Utah isn't bad, but I can't stand their Mormon booze laws. Montana is okay, but CA commies are taking over the larger cities/towns. Washington and Oregon are in the same boat as CA. Beautiful but managed like horse shit. I'd do parts of ID, AZ, CO and WY if I ever moved west. Maybe MT if we could work remotely and get some land 40-60 minutes from a bigger town.

So far looks like schools are much better in ID at least where I’m at. My two older sons really like the classes much more, my oldest went on about how much better and more hands on everything is. His art class has way better equipment, and he is doing a lot of lab work in science class instead of dumb work sheets. Wife told me all the kids seem much kinder and respectful of adults. My oldest son made a friend day one and kid called my wife Mam. Kid came up to my youngest in class and told him out of the blue if he needs anything or any help to ask, my wife was blown away. She is having a hard time and use to being on the defensive so much dealing with schools in CA she doesn’t know what to do in ID.
School is full time for younger grades and the rest are slowly opening up full time. They seem to also get a lot less homework so far. Oldest is looking forward to getting his learners permit to drive at 14 1/2yo.

This is an outrage. ID needs Illiterate Kommie entrenched, overpaid, over-tenured teacher's union apparatchiks to correct this situation where children receive education.
