I'm calling horseshit on the above 'woke' statement.
If 'Friends' had a minority on the frontline of the show, esp back in the 90s, a majority of the ppl of that minority group would accuse that person of being white-washed and a sell out.
Yes, an East Asian on the show would be called a 'banana'.
An South Asian would be called a 'coconut'.
An Latino would be called an Anglo wannabe.
And the list goes on, so thus, I'm happy that "Jose Chang" was not on the show.
And then, every now and then, a person on the show like Joey, would be called a racist for poking fun at Jose Chang.
So in effect, it's better for everyone to be white and thus, they can rag on each other and it's all in good fun.
I remember when I was a kid and all these ppl were mad at Vanessa Williams because she was too light skinned to represent a black woman as Miss America.
Yes, and an inability to accept the alt-reality of the 90s, where if Ming Na Wen played Amy Chen, counter to Courtney Cox & Jennifer Aniston, she'd be called a Dragon Lady/Tiger Lily-wannabe and most definitely a 'banana' by other Asians.
The same if Kal Penn showed up, counter to Matt LeBlanc & David Schwimmer, he'd be a coconut or some ABCD.
Really it wasn't until the new Battlestar Galactica of the mid-2000s, where they were finally able to get people of color to act 'white' w/o bashlash from every ethnic group.
As far as I'm concerned, until the parents and grandparents of the 'people of color' could accept their descendants acting 'white', circa year 2000+, then it's better that most shows of the 80s and 90s were basically 'white-on-white' humor or 'black-on-black' like "Living Colour".
