74-year-old homeowner kills suspect who attempted to break into home in southeast Houston.

“He busted the windows out with both hands. The first thing that comes to my mind is to grab my pistol and shoot him one time,” the homeowner said.

The homeowner said instead of backing down, the would-be intruder became even more aggressive.

“Came right back in through that window again. I didn’t know if he had something or not because everything happened so fast. After I shot him twice, he left and I didn’t come out the door anymore,” the homeowner said.

The soon-to-be 75-year-old victim said he called the police and waited for them to arrive. Police said they found the suspect collapsed outside of the front window.

“He was face down, somewhat, and I didn’t even walk over there to him,” the homeowner said.

He said he recently borrowed the pistol he used from his friend, hoping to avoid another break-in after being held up in his other house next door several years ago.

Good for the old guy - he smartened up after being robbed the first time and got a gun.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

It was the latest incident where a vehicle owner stopped an attempted theft with gunfire.



And another one: HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- A man attempting to break into a car at a northwest Harris County motel Saturday night was shot by the vehicle's owner, deputies said.

It happened around 11:00 p.m. in the 11700 block of Veterans Memorial near Milroy at the Palace Inn motel.
The break-in was thwarted by the owner when he came out to confront the man, Harris County sheriff's deputies said. Words were exchanged between the two before the owner opened fire on the suspect.

He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The incident was one of at least two in the Houston area where criminal suspects were shot by owners. In Pearland, a homeowner shot a suspect who broke in to their home and attacked two people with a hammer, police said. Three people were hospitalized in that incident.

seriously though homeowners shooting intruders is now a daily occurrence in Houston. I suspect intruders have migrated to Texas from CA or IL, and don't realize that most locals pack serious arsenals.

It reminds me of a work lunch table discussion a few years ago. Someone was reading off a news story from their phone, and when "semiautomatic handgun" was said, a liberal coworker had a kneejerk reaction where he loudly decried the viciousness of these weapons, and questioned why anyone would need such an instrument of destruction. lol.

I explained that most modern handguns are semi automatic, and explained that semi auto isnt really a big deal, and that the journalist is basically taking advantage of the naive to sell fear. He was a bit miffed and embarrassed, but admitted he knew nothing about guns. It was a large table, and I could tell he was far from the only one there who didn't. Not that its surprising.

If you ask around, you would be surprised how many people think "semi-auto" means "machine gun." I explained the true meaning of semi-auto to a co-worker, and he to google it because he was certain that semi-auto was "spraying with one pull of the trigger." After he googled it, I asked him why he had that misconception, and it was from CNN type and regular TV shows where semi-auto is used in a manner to imply machine gun.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Galleria-area homeowner says he woke up in the middle of the night to find a stranger in his backyard, but believes police took way too long to get there.

Ike Umar said he called 911 for help several times, but he claims it took a while for officers to show up.

As he was waiting for help, Umar said he was terrified that something would happen to his wife or their 6-month-old daughter.

Now, he's more upset with the Houston Police Department than the intruder.

"My wife woke me up, and she said, 'Hey, I think somebody's in the backyard.' So, I moved the curtain, and I see a face of a guy who's trying to look inside. My daughter's bed is right there," said Umar.

His home surveillance system caught a shirtless, tattooed intruder sneaking into his back gate around 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

"I said, 'Hey, who are you? What are you doing?' That's when I did my gun thing, like I loaded my gun. He heard that and just went up ... his hands."

Umar said the man didn't have a weapon and told him he was trying to find a place to hide from gang members who wanted to hurt him.

"When he said gang, six men and guns, I'm not thinking about my protection. I'm like, how can I keep these guys away long enough from my house so my daughter and my wife don't get hurt?" said Umar.

Those thoughts went through Umar's mind until Houston police officers finally arrived.

"So, you're waiting five minutes, then 10 minutes, then 15 minutes, then 20, and you're wondering, 'What the hell is going on?'" said Umar.

ABC13 is working to get an explanation from HPD, but Umar said they told him that they had a busy night.

"I don't care what they say. There's no excuse," he said. "If somebody's house is broken in and I'm holding someone at gun point, I have to wait 47 minutes for help? I honestly lost total faith in HPD today.'"
