I would prefer to sit next to a hardworking farm or factory worker compared to city drug addict or snooty elite.

Regardless, if they build it, and it keeps running, I've always felt that it would likely create some real estate investment opportunities in the areas around its path, such as in the central valley, as I have little doubt that adding high speed transportation would make those areas more desirable to live in - people could live there and enjoy the extremely cheap land (by ca standards) and commute by rail to job centers in la, the bay, or sac.

If you read the history of chinese High speed rail, The first few lines which made economic sense were hugely profit.
