The British drew the line between north and south to try to maintain a Protestant (invader) majority there, but I think the Catholics have out-reproduced them.

The Republic of Ireland (the south) has a higher GDP per capita than Britain now. They are doing very well.

There were and are a lot of dialects, but there was also a unified formal Gaelic used by scholars all through Ireland and Scotland.

Also, for some reason Irish never seems to have fragmented as much as, say, English. The different dialects along the western coast of Ireland are still mutually comprehensible.

Scottish Gaelic is now further removed, but they say it takes only about a week for an Irish speaker to learn Scots Gaelic or the reverse.

I'm pretty sure that's not true. I've gotten a bit familiar with the three main dialects of Irish. They do use different phrases for some things and have somewhat different pronunciations, but I think on the whole it's mostly mutually comprehensible.
