Specifically, with Fifth Service of the Federal Security Service (one of the branches of FSB) They were supposed to do the ground work for the invasion - gauge the mood of the population, build up the hotbeds of loyalty among the locals, manage provocateurs and alarmists, influence the ideology within Ukraine. They were paid handsomely for that. But apparently, some of the yachts that are now being expropriated around the world were supposed to be pro-Russian guerilla cells within Ukraine.

Here's another interesting bit. I posted about Medvedchuk in the thread about "liberators". He's Putin's close ally in Ukrainian political circles who was privy on some juicy Russian inside info. When the time came to leave Ukraine, he didn't leave for Russia. Ukrainian intelligence found him in one of the other states. He couldn't stay in Ukraine, but apparently he couldn't go to Russia either. It seems that he had a job to do, but his performance was less than stellar. So going to Russia for him meant facing Putin's wrath. He decided to run elsewhere and risk being found (and he lost)

It's very likely that the situation in military is close to that in the intelligence. You may have heard about the commander of the 13th tank regiment of the 4th tank division of the Russian Federation. He was ordered to re-open the stash of stored equipment, but they couldn't start any of the tanks except may be one or two. He shot himself.

Putler has few things going for him, but modern/functional equipment is not one of them.
