#fallathome Yesterday I wrote an Op-Ed on loneliness. It came back to haunt me yesterday. William Holden is one of my most beloved actors of all time. In 1981 when he was 63 years of age, he had a fall in his Santa Monica condominium. He was knocked unconscious. He was bleeding due to a head wound. He died before help arrived. His life should not have ended like that. He had a long-term domestic partnership with the actress Stephanie Powers. It broke up before the accident. Had Stephanie been there with him, she would have called 911. His life would have been saved.
Yesterday afternoon I suffered a fall in the bathroom. I was knocked unconscious and had a bleeding head injury. Elena came back from doing her volunteer work. My body was blocking the closed bathroom door. She had to force open the door. She found me unconscious. Elena weighs 130 lbs. and I weigh 217 lbs. She revived me and got me to bed. She administered first aid. She drove me to the Kaiser emergency room in South San Francisco where I got excellent medical care. Had I been alone I might have ended up like William Holden.

Whenever my wife get in a tiff, I remind her that in the end, it's just her and I watching out for each other so we'd better get back to good. Get back to good = being loving toward each other.

I had a neighbor who was celebrating his graduation from Yale law school.
He was drunk and fell hitting his head on a table.
He bled to death like William Holden.
I'm going to be alone when I'm a geezer; I will pay for someone to be around if necessary.
As of now I have company.

One option is to wear a safety pendant that detects a fall

He was celebrating by himself?

I guess the message is don't drink like William Holden and fall down in the bathroom.

Holden had polished off a liter or two of vodka when he conked his head.

"I've fallen and I can't get up!'

It isn't just the fall. Chronic alcoholics like Holden also don't have proper blood clotting mechanism due to the alcohol. They will bleed out easily from things that would be recoverable for non-alcoholics.

I'm glad you're OK Jack. I remember when William Holden died I was a young kid then. I remember my Father not being happy of the details about his death being released.
He thought it was very undignified of them to announce he got drunk and fell and hit his head on a table and bled out. When just reporting he died from a head injury would have been enough. I don't think my dad would be a fan of over sensationalized news today.

Maybe they should have announced Holden died saving an infant from the path of an oncoming car on Santa Monica Blvd. Wouldn't want to besmirch the romantic mythology of alcohol use. The marketing department would approve.

I'm not sure where you're going with that comment, but my Father came from a time, where the news was only reported and not sensationalized.
Reporting that someone died in a freak accident, was vivid details enough. People now are so hooked on sensationalized details, they need every story vividly and graphically laid out and explained to them. I find it repulsive when they report children that were killed by a parent or some random stranger. The news loves going into all of the twisted psychotic details. Do we need to know the lady drowned her children in a bath tub, and the oldest one fought and struggled? We're on our way to being as desensitized to it, as China is. Remember a few years back that video out of China that had a toddler walking across a busy highway, and not one single adult intervened.

Where I am gong with it is that those who abuse alcohol are more interested in defending the alcohol than they are the victims of alcohol abuse. May as well just defend fentanyl and those who died from it. It's junkie logic.

Why would anybody NOT want to know that Holden was a chronic, terminal alcoholic who died in an accident related to his affliction? Who gives a flying fuck about Holden's 'dignity'? He gave that up a long time before and didn't give a flying fuck himself as long as he could grab that bottle.

@ohomen171

Have any memory of how you fell? I'm just curious.

I'm asking, but since you never reply I think I'll just remain that way.

People have a tendency to ignore you because you're so incredibly rude, and ignore everybody else. You will only speak, you never show you listen.

I am on a strict alcohol consumption program of two glasses per day. I exceeded that with a whiskey. I drank 1/2 glass of whiskey. I had the fall in the bathroom when the door was closed. My wife rescued me. I was unconscious for 1 minute. I still had to go to the ER for a CT scan. Fortunately, there was no serious damage. I am on 6 months of alcohol abstinence. There will be a review at that point to see if I can have one drink per week. Getting drunk can easily turn deadly. It is not cute "to get loaded."

@ohomen171 - just quit drinking.

Strange thing is alcohol abusers may be shielding themselves from at least some of the consequences of the vax, due to alcohol's toxicology.

Maybe they should use it in an advertising campaign. "Forget the rampant, sexually aggressive babes and bar room yucks, save your hide with pint of vodka a day if you have been death vaxxed!"

I tell people all the time, the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house:

Sharp edges everywhere usually hard tiles and porcelain and mix that with possible water on floor

Usually the only room in the house that can lock so you can't get in easily

Tendencies to pass out after sitting on the toilet and stand up abruptly

Also, if your in there quiet and bleeding out on the floor everyone will give you time and opportunity to die as they usually don't disturb you while in the shower or on the toilet

Maybe a breathalyzer before the door unlocks to allow ingress and one of those infant monitors will do the trick.

This doesn't make sense for somebody that is drinking. This would force people to urinate in the kitchen sink.
