I have not been a fan of CDs after I started investing in mutual funds in the early 1980s.

Depends on your risk tolerance. You can earn 7% with blinklending.com.

You'd still lose to inflation, but it's probably better than holding cash at the moment.

I worked at Charles Schwab for 5 years and have to say they were a good employer and seem to be a very honest company.

It's about the same rate as 6 month T-Bills. The T-bills don't incur state income taxes (supposedly).

Ok - so what is the best place to keep cash that is relatively "safe" but can get returns close to inflation?
I recall some special short term treasury rate but I think that is over now...

Those rates are getting common now:

Schwabs money market is paying near 4.26% without having to lock it up for a year. SWVXX

One lesson from the 2001 crash was that money market is NOT CASH and can decrease in value.

So you can put $1000 in money market one day and find that you have $900 in it the next day. Learned this the hard way.

3 month Tbill rates Yield | 8:44 AM EST 4.457%

https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/US6M

3 month Tbill rates Yield 8:43 AM EST 4.754%

I normally buy these through a brokerage account.

12/29/2021 the yield on a 1 year T-Bill was 0.2030%

12/28/2022 the yield on a 1 year T-Bill is 4.75%

Just imagine the dramatic effect these rising rates will have on our already insane national debt, which no one seems to care about.

It's not always about beating inflation but also preserving capital in what appears to be a stagflationary environment.
