There is no need for a standing army. Can use the national guard or reserves which could be trained by US Marines and supplement the US Marines in times of conflict.
Founding Fathers envisioned that we needed a military for national defense, but not a military industrial complex.

However you need laws that prohibit starting a war and enforce the rule of law so that the MIC doesn't enrich themselves by killing and impoverishing and destabilizing other nations.
