California Road Charge

Road charge is an innovative funding mechanism that allows drivers to support road and highway maintenance based on how many miles they drive, instead of how many gallons of gas they use. Just like you pay your gas and electric bills based on how much of these utilities you use, a "user pays" system for transportation funding ensures that drivers all pay their fair share for highway and road maintenance.

Mileage could be tracked by plugging an electronic device into a vehicle, using a vehicle's built-in tracking system or by simply submitting photos of the vehicle's odometer, according to Caltrans

"Everyone has different levels of comfort when we're managing our data between efficiency and privacy, and that's why it's really important to have options from low tech to high tech," Prehoda said.

I was under the impression that gasoline taxes are already funding highways.

EV's don't and CA has the highest adaptation rate in the country if not the world for EV's. They pay zilch. EV's in CA will and so will other states. I've known this for a while, but governments are finally acting on it. Been talking about this in the Tesla threads.

Between the up front sticker shock and the new taxes coming, EV's will 1,000% not be worth it unless you enjoy the ride and that's it. You aren't green and you're up front paying for 5 years worth of gas/coal/nukes. Then you'll be like I need new tires, brakes, etc and just get a new car.

I get in this discussion constantly, EV's are not the future. They're more expensive. They're not green by any measure. I don't mind Musk, but everyone does realize every rocket ship he launches and EV he sells puts out waaaaaaaay more Co2 than any ICE vehicle on the market. If Co2 is of concern to you Musk might be the dirtiest business owner on the planet without knowing what China does.
