The Dems end up with a candidate that wasn't vetted by the constituency in a primary. Which is why no one challenged him. The debates would have steered clear of the woke policies that agitate and disturb the right. That until this point most Dem voters claim is fake news.
The woke Lefties would have blown it up because they didn't debate DEI and tranny issues. It would have been a shit show and turned half of the base off. Also they would have had to draw hard lines in the sand on Israel and Hamas further opening the rift. The only safe thing they could have debated would be Ukraine making it seem like that's all they care about.
So yeah an unvetted Democrat presidential candidate is very possible for these very reasons.
If one of the candidates was forced to drop out or died after the nominating convention, the party committees would vote to nominate a new candidate. This process would be a mighty succession battle with deep social unrest and uncertainty.
If Trump or Biden is actually elected president and then dies or has to drop out, the vice president would take over and be inaugurated as president. A new vice-president would be nominated and approved by the Senate. The Constitution is clear on this point.
